FACT CHECK: No, Jaffrabad shooter was not a part of CAA supporters

  • Share

Summary

None of the protesters in the viral video were carrying saffron flags. The claim that 'shooter' is associated with RSS or BJP is false. Several pictures and videos show the shooter emerging from the side of the anti-CAA protesters.

Amid months-long anti-CAA protests and ahead of US President Donald Trump's visit, violence erupted across northeast Delhi on the 23rd of February. On the second day of the clash between people supporting CAA and Anti-CAA protesters, stone-pelting, firing, and arson left one policeman and four others dead while over 60 were injured.

Following the incidents of rampant vandalism and riots, a video from northeast Delhi’s Jafrabad showing a protester rapidly moving towards a Delhi police personnel with a gun in his hands, subsequently shooting multiple rounds has gone viral on social media.

The video shows the man pointing the gun in the direction of a mob on the other side of the road and later towards the lone police personnel.

Congress Politician Salman Nizami shared the video of the incident with a caption, "Goons with saffron flags fires at Delhi Police. Salute this brave cop who faced them. Hope all are safe. BJP Govt is desperate to polarise these protests. Time to show unity & brotherhood. Hindu-Muslim ekta Zindabad! Jai Hind."

You can watch the video here:

Aam Aadmi Party MLA Amanatullah Khan tweeted some unclear images that the shooter is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He wrote, “The shooter will definitely have an association with Kapil Mishra and BJP. And that is the reason, he is firing at the Delhi police. The police are giving protection to the rioters (translated)”. The tweet has amassed over 1,000 retweets so far." (Translated from Hindi)

A claim also surfaced that the shooter is a CAA supporter as people seen in his background are carrying ‘saffron flags’.

The official handle of Shaheen Bagh also tweeted the video asserting that the shooter was a “pro-CAA goon”.

The video was first shared by Saurabh Trivedi, a senior reporter with The Hindu stating that an anti-CAA protester opened fire in Jafrabad.

Are people seen in the shooter's background carrying ‘saffron flags’?

After analyzing the video we found out that the protesters were carrying plastic crates, not saffron flags. The Quint has used a high-resolution image in one of its stories, in which some of the protesters with skull can be spotted pelting stones and carrying the rectangular plastic crates. Also, we can see many people in skull caps.

In the frames of the video shared by Saurabh Trivedi, one can spot the shooter coming from the side where protesters were carrying these saffron plastic crates.

News agency ANI reported that "the man in a red t-shirt who opened fire at police during violence in North East Delhi today has been identified as Shahrukh."

Was the mob behind the shooter CAA supporters or anti-CAA protesters?

We can clearly see many people wearing skull caps, a religious symbol of the Muslim community. The majority of the Muslim community is protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act which shows that the mob behind the shooter were anti-CAA protesters.

In conclusion, none of the protesters were carrying saffron flags. The claim that 'shooter' is associated with RSS or BJP is false. Several pictures and videos show the shooter emerging from the side of the anti-CAA protesters.
