  • Share

Summary

In the wake of the upcoming by-election in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress Party ( TMC) MP Mahua Moitra was accused of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). In our investigation, we found that the viral picture of Mahua Moitra is an old one that was clicked on August 18.

In the wake of the upcoming by-election in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress Party ( TMC) MP Mahua Moitra was accused of breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The allegation erupted along with a picture of Moitra interacting with a woman, Thanarpara's OC in the background.

State Secretary of BJP West Bengal, Tushar Kanti Ghosh, sent a letter to the EC on Monday, claiming Moitra broke the rules by taking Sumit Kumar Ghosh, the officer in charge (OC) of Thanarpara, for door-to-door campaigning.

Kailash Vijayvargiya, the national general secretary of the BJP shared the image along with the notice on Twitter, claiming that West Bengal police have joined hands with the TMC ahead of the by-elections.

The same was tweeted by Raju Bista, along with a caption, "West Bengal is a police state, where police work for the ruling TMC. Hope @ECISVEEP @SpokespersonECI of India is taking note."

The Truth behind this claim

Debunking the allegation, in reply to the notice, the general secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress, Subrata Bakshi, accused the BJP of “peddling fake news and falsehood”.

The viral image of MP Mahua Moitra was actually clicked on August 18, when Maitra had gone to her Krishnanagar constituency’s Karimpur area to interact with party workers.

Mahua Moitra shared the reply in her tweet saying, "Need a special law just to tackle the fake news menace. Shameful lows that the ruling party has fallen to."

Mohua Moitra had shared the same picture on her Facebook account on August 18 along with many other pictures.

Therefore, with the above information, we can conclude that the viral picture of Mahua Moitra can't be used to claim that she breached the Model code of conduct.
