No, the viral video of Australia’s double-decker metro train is not Made In India

  • Share

Summary

The double-decker metro train in the viral video is actually a Waratah train and was manufactured by Reliance Rail, which is neither an Indian company nor the coaches were manufactured in India.

However, it is true that 22 "Made in India" coaches had been transported to Australia in December 2018.

A video of Australia’s double-decker metro train is getting viral on social media with the claim that 22 trains, developed under ‘Make in India’, were made operational in Syndey. A tweeter user name Piyush Singh tweet a post with a caption "What a transformation! A country is known for land of Snakes & Black magic in Nehru Era to #MadeInIndia First time in History- Coaches Made in India being run in a foreign land! 22 metro trains were made operational in Sydney Yesterday. Proud of you @narendramodi & @PiyushGoyal".

The video is also getting viral on Facebook as well. A user name Kashinath Shastri shared a post with a caption “22 metro trains were Made operational in Sydney yesterday! A Matter of Pride, all these trains were MADE IN INDIA! First time in History- Coaches Made in India being run in a foreign land! When PM Modi said New India, this is what he meant.”

After doing a simple Google search, we found a video on Youtube posted on April 2018 with a caption Awesome Double Decker Metro Train in Sydney, Australia

According to a report, the French manufacturer, Alstom’s Sricity facility in Andhra Pradesh, India completed the last of the 22 Metropolis trains for Sydney Metro on December 6th.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had also tweeted, "Testament to the robust success of 'Make in India', the Indian facility of a French multinational company has delivered 22 train sets to Australia's Sydney Metro, strengthening India's role as an international manufacturing & engineering hub".

Clearly, the video existed on YouTube much before the coaches were transported to Sydney on Dec 2018.

In 2014, Alstom won a contract to deliver 22 six-car trainsets, as well as the CBTC signaling system, for the North West Rail Link, Australia's biggest public transport project and first fully-automated metro network. Australia’s Sydney Metro launched its first fully-automated driverless railway service on May 26

But the train shown in viral video is a double-decker while the trains under the Alstom project are single-decker.

The Train shown in the Viral video is a Waratah train and was manufactured by Reliance Rail an Australian company which is a hybrid suburban passenger railway network operating in Sydney as part of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Sydney Trains. Detailed design of the Waratah trains was completed in 2009 and delivery of the Waratah trains commenced on July 2011 and was completed in May 2014. Reliance Rail is required to make 72 trains available to Sydney Trains for timetabled services each day until the end of the 30-year contract term.

Conclusion: the viral video of coaches in the double-decker train has not been made in India.
