Swastika or Nazi symbol: Decoding the symbol in Arvind Kejriwal's tweet

  • Share

Summary

The symbol in Arvind Kejriwal's tweet is not Swastika which is considered holy in Hinduism but a symbol of Nazi Party of German in the early 20th century.

On March 20, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted an image with a caption "Someone sent this..". He didn't give any context or explanation for sharing this image. The image looks like a screenshot of the Facebook post with a message "Hoping for a Delhi, that I actually wouldn't mind visiting or living in".

The image depicts a man running behind a ‘Swastika’ shape with a broom in his hand, chasing it out. This didn't go down well with many people who started abusing Delhi's CM Arvind Kejriwal for insulting Hindus.

A Facebook user Mudita Dhavan called him an idiot for defaming Hindus.

Another Twitter user claims that the image depicts the man with a broom in his hand is chasing Hindus away and this is what AAP stands for.

However, an AAP supporter Aarti tweeted that the symbol in Arvind Kejriwal's tweet is not Swastika which is considered holy in Hinduism but a symbol of Hitler's Swastika.

Swastika or Nazi symbol

swastika is a symbol found in many cultures, with different meanings, drawn in different styles. Swastika symbol that is considered holy in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism in India.

Here is a Swastika in a Hindu temple in Rajasthan.

If we rotate the swastika by 45 degrees either clockwise or anti-clockwise, we will get the symbol used by Hitler's Nazi party. Here is an image comparing Nazi's symbol with Swastika and the image tweeted by Kejriwal.

Clearly, the symbol in Kejriwal's tweet resembles more with Nazi's symbol than Swastika. Hence, we can say that the symbol in Kejriwal's tweet is Nazi's symbol, not Swastika. Thus the image shared by Kejriwal depicts a man with a broom in his hand is chasing Nazis out of Delhi.

However, a chief minister should refrain from sharing such posts because many people can take it as Swastika as they may not be aware of the Nazi party's symbol.
