Fact Check: 8-year-old image falsely shared to show violence against Hindus in West Bengal

  • Share

Summary

An eight-year from Bangladesh is being falsely shared as a recent one showing violence against Hindus in Hooghly, West Bengal.

A horrific incident was reported from the national capital on April 11, when a 40-year-old man stabbed his wife to death in Rohini’s Vijay Vihar in broad daylight. A CCTV footage of the incident has also gone viral on social media. Following this, the footage is being shared on social media claiming that the woman was attacked because she was against ‘Love Jihad’, insinuating that the man is a Muslim.

A Facebook user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Delhi is turning into Kashmir. A woman opposed to ‘Love Jihad’ was stabbed to dead in broad daylight. Nobody tried to help her. This fear will result in destruction of the Hindus. Wake up, Hindus! Else this will happen everywhere.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. There is no communal angle to the incident.

According to an India Today report dated April 11, the accused has been identified as Harish Mehta who repeatedly stabbed his wife Neelu Mehta on suspicion of infidelity.

The Indian Express and The Hindu have also reported the incident with no mention of any communal angle.

In response to one such viral tweet, DCP Rohini's official Twitter handle took to Twitter rubbishing any communal angle to the incident. The tweet when translated read, "You are spreading unbridled rumors by distorting the facts. In fact, it is a case of a husband beating his wife, in which Harish, age 45, stabbed his wife Neelu, age 40, with a knife. The accused has been arrested. Both husband and wife belong to the same community. Love is not a jihad thing."

The second tweet reads, "Please do not try to spoil the communal harmony without knowing the facts. This incident is from outside their house. You are requested to have some sensitivity in such cases."

Reportedly, a case has been registered against Mehta and police have begun an investigation adding that during the interrogation, Mehta revealed that he had recently married Neelu who used to work at the Safdarjung Hospital.

In conclusion, visuals of a horrific incident from Delhi showing a man murdering his wife in broad daylight are being widely shared with a false 'Love Jihad' angle.
