Fact Check: Old video from California falsely shared as a recent one from Canada

  • Share

An old unrelated video from California dating back to 2016 showing a brawl between a group of women in a Gurudwara is being falsely shared as a recent one from Canada.

In the backdrop of the ongoing farmers' protest in the country, a video has surfaced on social media showing a scuffle between two groups of women inside a Gurudwara claiming that the video is from Canada.

Facebook user shared the video with the caption saying, "There is a Religious Power struggle in Canada Gurudwara. They who try to hurt Bharat will burn in the fire they set up for us."

In the video one can see people taking out swords during the clash. It is being said that Justin Trudeau supported the Khalistanis in India and now Sikhs are fighting among themselves for power in Gurudwaras in Canada.

The same video was also shared on Twitter with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is supporting Khalistanis in India. Now in Canada itself struggle for the power of Gurdwaras started. Soon it will be seen all over Canada."

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The video is an old one and dates back to January 2016 and is not from Canada but from California.

With the help of reverse image search, we found this video uploaded on YouTube on January 12, 2016. The title of the video reads, "Fight between Sikhs in Turlock gurdwara California |HAMDARD TV."

We also found this video carried in a news report by ABP news in 2016. As per several media reports, the incident took place at a famous gurdwara in Northern California’s Turlock city apparently over a leadership issue and it came to light after a video of the chaos was made public.

In conclusion, an old unrelated video from California dating back to 2016 showing a brawl between a group of women in a Gurudwara is being falsely shared as a recent one from Canada.
