Fact Check: Old video from California falsely shared as a recent one from Canada

  • Share

Summary

An old unrelated video from California dating back to 2016 showing a brawl between a group of women in a Gurudwara is being falsely shared as a recent one from Canada.

Hindi News Channel Republic Bharat recently reported that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi snubbed the family of an alleged rape survivor who hailed from Rajasthan, while addressing a gathering in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh on 23 February. Following this, several social media users started sharing the screenshot of the news report making the same claim.

Republic Bharat tweeted that the Congress leader snubbed the family of a girl who was allegedly raped in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur and was demanding justice.

Following the report, the claim was widely shared on social media by several users.

A Facebook user wrote, "Rajasthan: Priyanka Gandhi ignored rape victim's request for justice. Police arrested Is any Congress member alive or everyone passed away?"

Another Facebook user shared the screenshot with a similar caption.

The screenshot of the report is viral on Twitter as well.

The truth behind the claim

The viral claim is false. The other media report and visuals of the event show that Gandhi stopped her speech mid-way and met the protesting family of the rape survivor.

We checked the media coverage of the event and found a report by the Hindustan Times. The report shows Priyanka stopping her speech and walking down the stage to meet the girl. In the background, one can hear people on the stage saying, 'let them come' in Hindi.

The same sequence of events was LIVE streamed on Tuesday, 23 February on Congress’ official handle.

As per an NDTV report, the alleged rape survivor’s mother from Rajasthan who was present in the gathering was chanting slogans to seek justice.

“The Congress leader was on stage, addressing the farmers' meeting when she was interrupted by the woman's slogans. Priyanka Gandhi then spoke to the woman and took her aside. She dialed Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on the spot and asked him to help the rape survivor,” the report added.

Republic Bharat has now taken down the article. The media outlet published another article in which it mentioned that the Congress leader met the concerned family and spoke to Rajasthan Chief Minister.

In conclusion, the Hindi channel Republic Bharat published a report falsely claiming that Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi ignored the rape victim's request for justice.
