Fact Check: An edited video of Deputy CM of Uttar Pradesh widely shared on social media

  • Share

Summary

A viral video showing Deputy CM of UP, Keshav Prasad Maurya saying that under the leadership of PM Modi neither the farmers nor the citizens of this country could get any benefits has been cleverly edited by removing some words. In the original video, Maurya was saying that nothing wrong could happen with the farmers, the country, and its citizen under the leadership of PM Modi.

A purported screenshot of an OpIndia report on Greta Thunberg is being widely shared on social media platforms showing an article mentioning that Greta Thunberg’s real name is ‘Ghazala Bhat’. The screenshot also shows Greta wearing a hijab.

A Facebook user shared the image with the caption saying, "Indian Media at its best."

The text in the story read, “The real face of Great Thunberg. Her real name is Ghazala Bhat she is daughter of Kashmiri Bussinessmen Hilal Bhat who married to Swedish mother Anna Bjorklund converted to Islam became Aafia. Her parents got killed into car accident. She became orphan later adopted by Svante Thunberg.”

It also contained two images – one of Thunberg in a green hijab and one of her during her speech at the 2019 UN climate action summit in New York.

The screenshot was originally shared by Founder of Khalsa Aid International, Ravi Singh with the caption saying, "A new level of depravity by the right wing indian GUTTER press !!! ?This is the same GUTTER press attacking me & Khalsa Aid with lies! ?Welcome to the new & fascist face of India."

This image is being shared in the backdrop of climate and environmental activist, Greta Thunberg's recent tweet in support of India’s protesting farmers.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this image to be edited. OpIndia did not publish any such story and the images in the screenshot showing Thunberg in a hijab is also morphed.

The article shown in the viral image does not match the layout of OpIndia’s website.

Moreover, we did not find any such article on the website of OpIndia.

On performing reverse image search, we found the original photo of a girl in a green hijab available to download from Pixabay, a platform where creatives share copyright-free images, videos and music.

In conclusion, a morphed image is being shared falsely on social media with a claim that the OpIndia has published an article on Greta Thunberg saying her real name is ‘Ghazala Bhat’
