The flags waved at the Red Fort on Republic Day by protestors were not a Khalistani flag but the Nishan Sahib, a religious flag of Sikhs, which was raised at Red Fort.
A video is being widely shared on social media showing a man placing two Indian flags on the ground, saying that the flag should be stepped on and then stepping on it and trampling it. He is surrounded by a crowd holding Khalistan flags and chanting 'Khalistan Zindabad' and 'India out of Khalistan'.
Several social media users are sharing this video linking it to the January 26 violence in Delhi when farmers clashed with the police and also breached the Red Fort.
Harsha Narayan, former State Secretary ABVP Karnataka shared the video with the caption saying, "All culprits in yesterday's disturbances must be brought to book. This video clearly shows it to be an act of sedition."
Several other Facebook and Twitter users are sharing this video with a similar claim.
In our investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. The video was shot in Sacramento in California (US).
On closely analyzing the video, we found a profile ID – ‘amanvir_singh5’ written on the top-left corner.
On further checking, we found a TikTok profile exists with that same ID.
The person running the account is based in the United States and has uploaded the viral video on January 25, a day before the violence in Delhi.
In one of his previous videos, ‘amanvir_singh5’ asks people to assemble at ‘7609 Wilbur Way, Sacramento, CA 95828’ on ‘25 January 2021 – Monday – 11 am’ to protest against India for the ‘1984 Sikh Genocide’.
We checked the mentioned address on Google maps and found similarities in the viral video and the area in Sacramento, California.
In conclusion, a video from California showing a group disrespecting the Indian flag and chanting Khalistan slogans is being falsely linked to the farmer's protest.
