A video showing a tradition followed for over 100 years is being with a misleading claim that the Mumbai Police under the Shiv Sena has started a new ritual of offering homage at the Mahim Dargah.
A video has surfaced on social media showing Mumbai Police officials paying obeisance at the shrine of Sufi saint Makhdoom Mahimi, at Mahim Dargah claiming that the tradition has been started by the ruling Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government.
The video was shared by a Twitter user with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Mumbai Police paying homage at the shrine of Hazrat Makhdoomi Shah for the first time. This is the end of the Shiv Sena government."
The video is also viral on Facebook with the same claim.
In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The tradition almost dates back to 100 years and is not related to any party or politics.
Using keyword search on YouTube, we found several videos showing Mumbai police performing the same tradition.
On performing relevant keyword searches, we found several news reports point out that Mahimi has been the patron saint of Mumbai Police since the 15th century.
We found a report published by The Scroll in 2015, according to which, Makhdum Ali Mahimi, who is buried in Mahim Dargah, is the patron saint of Mumbai police. “Once a year on Mahimi’s Urs, thousands from around the city come to pay their respect and seek his blessings. The Mumbai police force has the privilege of laying the first chadar, or decorative tomb covering, of the Urs in Mahimi’s respect,” the report says.
We also found another report that states a 1911 Gazette mandated police officers of the area to offer the first chaadar/ sandal (decorative cloth covering for a tomb) at the 10-day festival in honour of the saint.
In conclusion, a video showing a tradition followed for over 100 years is being with a misleading claim that the Mumbai Police under the Shiv Sena has started a new ritual of offering homage at the Mahim Dargah.
