Fact Check: No, Google has not opened office in Pakistan

  • Share

Summary

Google has not opened an office in Pakistan as of now. The viral pictures which are being shared to show the alleged Google office are actually from a Google store in Lahore.

Recently, a set of images showing an office with big Google's logo on a wall is being widely shared on social media claiming that Google has opened its first-ever office in Pakistan.

A Twitter user shared the set of images with a caption saying, "Thanks to the personal efforts and best strategy of Prime Minister Imran Khan, Google has opened its first office in Pakistan which will benefit the economy to the tune of crore of rupees. Thank you PM@ImranKhanPTI."

A Facebook user shared one of the images and wrote, "Google's First Office Opened Location Sector G-9, Islamabad #Pakistan."

Many other users are also sharing the images with the same claim.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. Google has not opened any office in Pakistan as of now.

When we checked on the web whether Google's office is in Pakistan or not and we found many news reports about a decision by the Government of Pakistan according to which, "It has been made mandatory for social media companies to open offices in Pakistan."

As per a Times of India report, the recently-laid out rules by the government of Pakistan made it compulsory for social media companies to open offices in Islamabad and build data servers to store information.

The letter further states Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) that comprises Facebook, Google, Twitter and others; these companies have written a letter to Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan warning suspension of operations in the country if the new rules are not revised.

Moreover, we also did not find any news reports stating that Google has confirmed that they are opening office in anywhere is Pakistan.

We also checked Google's official website for the company's office locations and could not find any address or details about the alleged Pakistan office here.

On further investigating, we found that the viral image shows a Google store in Lahore, Pakistan.

Therefore, Google has not opened office is Pakistan as of now. The viral pictures which are being shared to show the alleged Google office are actually from a Google store in Lahore.
