Fact Check: Madhya Pradesh Congress misused Khunti Police mock drill video to target Shivraj Singh Chauhan

  • Share

Summary

Madhya Pradesh Congress used a video of a mock drill by Jharkhand Police to show that Madhya Pradesh Police fired on farmers under the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government.

As the by-elections in 28 assembly constituencies of Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to be held on November 3, 2020, Madhya Pradesh Congress put out a video on social media platforms targeting MP Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

Madhya Pradesh Congress shared the video with a caption in Hindi, that can be roughly translated to, "The caption when translated reads, "15 years of Shivraj has pushed Madhya Pradesh in a state of despondency. Shivraj has become synonymous with lies, announcements, acting, corruption, and farmer suicides. The public now knows the lust for power behind Shivraj's changing masks/facades. Shivraj Ji if you spread lies like this, you will lose the respect in the eyes of voters."

This video was also shared by MP Congress on Facebook with the same caption.  The video is an attempt to show the reflection of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's rule in the state and shows visuals of police firing on farmers in broad daylight.

The video was shared by a number of Facebook users with the same caption.

However, the visual of police firing in the video is a 2017 mock drill video from Jharkhand that and is being falsely shared to be from Madhya Pradesh.

FACT CHECK

With the help of a reverse image search, we found a similar video that was uploaded on YouTube on November 1, 2017, stating that it was a mock drill by Jharkhand's Khunti Police.

Another longer duration video from another angle is available on Youtube with the headline "Jharkhand police KHUNTI (part of training) REHEARSAL". At around 1:30 minutes in the video, an announcement is made that this is just a drill by Khunti Police.

Also, while police are seen firing at the crowd, everyone else standing by sides are so calm but what actually happens in such situations is chaos and running of people all around which can not be seen in the video.

The same clip has previously gone viral with several other fake claims which we had debunked in three of our articles. You can find the article here, here, and here.

In conclusion, Madhya Pradesh Congress used a video of a mock drill by Jharkhand Police to show that Madhya Pradesh Police fired on farmers under the Shivraj Singh Chauhan government.
