Fact Check: Photo of a half-burnt body of a woman from Madhya Pradesh shared with a false communal claim

  • Share

Summary

The photo showing the half-burnt body of a woman is related to a murder in Dhar district (Madhya Pradesh). The woman was allegedly killed and then burnt by two men, Sohan and Govind, over a dispute. There was no communal angle to the incident.

YSR Congress rebel member in Lok Sabha K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju has alleged that there was constructive destruction of Hindu temples in Andhra Pradesh and sought that a dharmic commission is established to address the issue.

Amid this, a picture of a partly damaged Saraswati idol is being circulated on social media with the claim that it was a result of communally charged hooliganism.

A Twitter user name Arun Nationalist shares the post with a caption “A Saraswati Idol which was placed near to Sringeri Sankara Mutt in Narasaraopet, Guntur District has been recently desecrated by miscreants. The Hooligans have poured alcohol on the idol and even the face of the idol has been destroyed completely,”

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading. The incident is 2 years old and there is no communal angle.

After doing research using related keywords on google we found a video on Youtube uploaded by R9 News dated October 6, 2020, Vijay Kumar, the owner of the land, explained that the land was given for lease to a private college which was removed two years back. The idol which was placed by the college authorities was destroyed 2 years back itself. This is not a recent incident.

We found a tweet from the official account of Guntur Rural District Police, who clarified that the incident occurred in the Sringeri Shankara Math area of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. The tweet reads, "The news that the idol of Goddess Saraswati was vandalized in Narasaraopet in the morning is completely untrue and deliberately misrepresented, according to the owner of the place."

Guntur Rural SP giving an explanation about Saraswati Idol's destruction said any person spreading fake news on the social media platforms with intentions to inflame communal passions will be taken to task by the police. He also requested people not to believe the rumors.

In Conclusion, the image of a partly damaged Saraswati idol is being circulated on social media with the false claim that it was a result of communally charged hooliganism.
