  • Share

Summary

On September 28, Rashtriya Savarna Parishad national campaigner Pankaj Dhavaraya, along with some other members  came out in support of the accused in the Hathras case and reached the SP office to submit a memorandum in their defense.

Recently, a video surfaced on social media platforms with a claim that it shows Congress party leader Phool Singh Baraiya being attacked for his sexist and caste-based remarks.

The video was shared on a Facebook page

with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Congress candidate Phool Singh Baraiya who was speaking about keeping sawarna (upper caste) women at his home was given a proper thrashing. He won't speak like this again."

At the time of writing this article, this post has been reshared over 2000 times.

Many other Facebook users have shared the same video with the same claim.

A Twitter user named Ashok also shared the same video with the same caption.

The video shows a mob beating up a man as police try to rescue him and take him away.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral video is 4-year-old and shows a  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from West Bengal being assaulted by a mob.

With the help of a reverse image search using the keyframes of the video, we found that the incident is from October 2016, and the person in the viral clip is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader from West Bengal Subrata Mishra who was beaten up by reported TMC workers. Union Minister Babul Supriyo, a BJP Member of Parliament (MP) from Asansol had gone to BNR More area in Asansol where he was hit after a senior local party leader Subrata Mishra was beaten as members of the two parties clashed, reported NDTV on October 20, 2016.

We found the same visuals in this video report by ANI where Mishra can be seen being assaulted at the 14 seconds timestamp.

On October 19, 2016, news agency ANI also shared some images of the incident in which Mishra can be spotted.

Earlier, after demonetization the same clip was viral in November 2016, falsely claiming that BJP MP Dr Harsh Vardhan was beaten up by an angry mob outside a bank in Delhi.  However, Dr. Vardhan called out this claim false and clarified that on the viral video stating that it is being spread with malicious and mischievous intent.

In conclusion, an old video from 2016 being shared with a false claim that Congress leader Phool Singh Baraiya beaten for his casteist and sexist comments
