FACT CHECK: Was Nirav Modi forced by Congress to leave the country?

Summary

An unverified message on social media falsely claims that fugitive businessman Nirav Modi was forced by Congress members to leave India and that he paid 456 crores as commission to Congress.

The user @d_k1357 shared the graphic video on Twitter with a caption that translates to, “If farmers and labourers die, people let them die. They aren’t Sushant after all. If their farms and houses get ruined, let it happen, they aren’t Kangana’s office or house after all.” Moreover, he continued to make claims which translate to, “This is the incident which happened in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh when a poor farmer protested the forcible occupation of his land, then goons, Mawalis, demons burnt alive that Dalit poor, farmer, labourer alive.” and he proceeded to tag the Amethi and UP police state accounts and the account of the DGP of UP.


This tweet of his has been shared and liked more than a thousand times.

In order to verify this claim and the claim adhered to the video, we did a reverse image check from the frames of the video and found some news articles written about the video.

From an article from TOI, we come to know that this video is more than a year old and according to the news sources, The video is from UP where a couple set themselves ablaze inside Mathura police station after they did not get justice after filing a complaint against a neighbour who harassed them. A full report of the incident which took place can be read here.

Using keyword search, we also found an update on the incident tweeted by the Mathura Police where the SSP has stated in a video recording that the accused had been arrested and an FIR has been filed against the policemen who failed to take action.
