Fact Check: The viral picture of Dr. Ambedkar and his wife on a bus in the United States is morphed

  • Share

The viral image of Dr. Ambedkar and his wife Savita Ambedkar displayed on the bus running in Columbia, US is photoshopped. The photograph is from Bath, Somerset, England, and not from Columbia

A photograph showing Dr. Ambedkar and his wife Savita Ambedkar is getting viral on social media with a claim that it has been done to honor Dr. Ambedkar in Columbia, USA.

A Twitter user name Kiran Verma shares the picture with a caption, "Baba Saheb's picture on the city bus plying on the streets of Columbia. This is a real honor, America still considers Baba Saheb as its ideal because America's economy is based on the same book that Baba Saheb wrote for his doctoral thesis in British times". ( Translated from Hindi )

The same picture is also widely shared on Facebook with the same claim.

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral image is morphed. The photograph is not from Columbia but from Bath, Somerset, England and no photo of Dr. Ambedkar, and his wife was displayed on the bus.

After doing a reverse image search on google, we found that it is a tourist bus in Bath, England.  The original photo of the bus was found in the ‘Wikimedia Commons’ website. The picture was clicked by photographer Adrian Pingstone in July 2008. The description of the image reads "City Sightseeing's 273 (EU05 VBJ), a Volvo B7L/Ayats Bravo City, in Bath, Somerset, England. Unlike many City Sightseeing tours that are run under franchise to other operators, this one is run directly by the company themselves, "No photo of Dr. Ambedkar or his wife is displayed on the bus.

Below is a comparison of both the viral and original pictures :

We also found the photograph of Ambedkar and his wife Savita Ambedkar seen in the viral photo in a blog post from June 2017.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar had received his Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in 1927 and an honorary degree in 1952 as "a great social reformer and a valiant upholder of human rights. The university has included his autobiography "Waiting For A Visa" in its curriculum.

In Conclusion, the viral image of Dr. Ambedkar and his wife Savita Ambedkar displayed on the bus running in Columbia, US is photoshopped. The photograph is from Bath, Somerset, England, and not from Columbia. There is no report from any credible source of this bus in Columbia sporting the image of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and his wife.
