The cropped video clip from an episode of Dance India Dance that aired in 2015 as part of a prank pulled on one of the judges over not selecting a contestant is going viral with a false claim.
Recently, a retired Navy officer, Madan Sharma was beaten up by Shiv Sena workers in Mumbai a few days ago after he shared a forwarded post with a cartoon of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Following this, a video started getting viral on social media platforms claiming that members of Shiv Sena shaved another man’s head and assaulted him. You can watch the video here:
A Twitter user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "In your Maharashtra, has Uddhav Thackeray’s government become a government of goons? Law has become a joke."
This video has been reshared over 17000 times.
This video is being circulated on Facebook as well as on Twitter.
The video is also viral on Instagram.
In the video, one could see a group of people first abusing and thrashing a man, and then shaving off his head.
In our investigation, we found that this incident indeed the incident indeed took place, however, it’s from last year. On December 22, 2019 a Wadala resident Hiramani Tiwari was roughed up and his head tonsured over a Facebook post.
With the help of keyword searches on Google, we found reports by several media outlets including NDTV, HW News English, and Republic TV.
According to The Hindu report, an FIR was filed against Shiv Sena leader Samadhan Jugdar and three others for unlawful assembly, rioting, assault, intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code at Wadala TT police station.
Reportedly, Mr. Tiwari, who works in the private sector, had put up a post about Mr. Thackeray’s statements likening the recent police action against protesting students to the pre-Independence Jalianwala Bagh massacre. The statement had angered local Shiv Sainiks, who gathered outside his house and forced him to come out, after which Mr. Jugdar shaved Mr. Tiwari’s head in full public view using an electronic shaver.
Maharashtra CM’s son Aaditya Thackeray wrote on December 24, 2019, “Law and order is a subject of police and shouldn’t be taken into anyone’s hands.”
In conclusion, a video showing Shiv Sena members assaulting a man for his post on social media from last year revived in the backdrop of a recent incident in which a retired navy officer was thrashed by Shiv Sena members over a social media posts.
