On 20th May, cyclone Amphan battered the coastal districts West Bengal, Odisha with heavy rain and storm causing huge damage to properties and lives. According to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), as Amphan hit the city with wind speeds of 130 kmph and more, over 5,000 trees were uprooted. While several fell on houses, the others lay across roads, blocking traffic and snapping electricity, telephone and broadband cables. Meanwhile, a video is going viral on social media claiming to be of the Cyclone Amphan. 

A twitter user name Ananth Rupanagudi shared a video with a claim that "The power of the wind and rain is indeed frightening! Just look at the fallen vehicle and the electric tower! #CycloneAmphan".

The Environmental activist Greta Thunberg retweeted the video of Ananth Rupanagudi on her timeline. After this, the video becomes increasingly viral on social media.

The viral video received 132,400 views and 2,100 likes and 663 retweets at the time of writing this article. 

Fact Check 

In our investigation, we found that this is not the video of cyclone Amphan. The viral video is of Cyclone Fani which hit Odisha last year.

After doing a reverse image search of keyframes, we found the video was uploaded on 3 MAY, 2019 by a Facebook page name Bhubaneswar Buzz. According to the caption "In Puri, the wind is blowing at a speed of 180 km per hour, blowing four wheels!" ( Roughly translated from Odia). Puri is a city in the state of Odisha in eastern India.

However, we could not find any credible media report confirming the exact location of this video. But since this video is at least a year old, we can certainly say this viral video has no link to the recent cyclone Amphan.

Here is the comparison of both the viral video and the video of Cyclone Fani from 2019.

Cyclone Fani , one of the strongest storms to batter the Indian subcontinent in decades, made landfall near the city of Puri, in Odisha state, between April 26 and 5 May.

In conclusion, the viral video is not the recent video of cyclone Amphan but of Cyclone Fani which hit Odisha last year.
