Fact Check: Were Tablighi Jamaat patients roaming nude inside hospital?

  • Share

Summary

The viral video presenting a Tablighi Jamaat roaming naked in a coronavirus isolation ward in an old-unrelated video from Pakistan. However, the nursing staff of Ghaziabad's MMG District Hospital has complained that Jamaat patients were roaming without pants in the isolation ward.

In the backdrop of multiple reports of Tablighi Jamaat members misbehaving with police and health officials, a video is doing rounds on social media claiming that a member of Tablighi Jamaat was found roaming naked and smashing glass doors with his head, in a coronavirus isolation ward in UP.

A twitter user named Kiran Jain shared his video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Tablighi Jamaat in UP's Isolation ward. Anybody else needs any proof. #coronajehad"

At the time of writing this article, this tweet received more than 1800 retweets and 2400 likes.

The same video is also being circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp.

In this 20-sec viral clip, one can see a naked man breaking glass doors with his head with blood all over his body. In the background some men can be heard saying 'stop him.'

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found that the claim made through this video is fake, as it is an old video from Pakistan.

With the help of a reverse image search, we found a longer version of the video to be uploaded on a YouTube channel named Top Trend. The video was uploaded on August 25, 2019, and has the title "Naked man entered in Mosque, Gulshan e Hadeed Karachi."

In this video, a person is following the naked man on his bike before the man enters the mosque. The description of the video when translated from Urdu reads, "An unidentified man broke into the Khalid Bin Walid mosque of the Ahl-e-Hadith school district on Gulshan-e-Hadid Phase 2 Double Road and the imam's place lay down after the glasses were damaged."

The same video was also shared on a Facebook page named Pakistan Today Webtv according to which, the naked man was identified as Shafiq Abro after being arrested by Steel Town Police, Karachi and he is mentally ill.

Report of Jamaat patients' misbehavior in Ghaziabad's MMG District Hospital

It is important to mention that even though this video is not related to Tablighi Jamaat members, the news that Tablighi Jamaat patients were making vulgar signs, and roaming nude inside the hospital is not entirely fake.

Ghaziabad CMO has written a letter to the local police saying that the Tablighi Jamaat Markaz event attendees, who have been put under observation at the Ghaziabad hospital, have been misbehaving with the hospital staff.

The hospital's nursing staff had complained against these patients.

"The Jamaati patients put under observation for suspected coronavirus infection at the hospital's isolation ward have been roaming around without their pants, nude, and listening to vulgar songs," writes the Ghaziabad's MMG District Hospital CMO in the letter.

The complaint was made by the hospital's nursing staff.
