Rahul Gandhi didn't visit dargah after election: the video in which he is wearing a skull cap is old

A video showing Rahul praying with Muslim clerics is going viral on social media. The video claims that soon after the elections in Rajasthan, MP, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, the Congress president turned to Islam leaving his "jenau" behind. 

Most of the users have shared this video with a caption "Rahul Gandhi came to his true self after the election is over".

Rahul can be seen wearing a skull cap and offering prayers in the video along with senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. An aged Muslim cleric can be heard saying prayers for Rahul. All of them are standing beneath a red canopy.

From the logo in the video, it is clear that the video was first created by a Facebook page Argumentative Indian.

The same video has been shared by many Facebook pages with the same claim. Some of the pages are ModiNama, Social Tamasha, India 272.

Our Investigation

When we searched for Rahul's visit to mosques, Mazaar, Dargah, etc, we found a news clip of Samay Live on YouTube. The visual, location and people in the news clip match exactly with the viral video.

This news report was published on September 10, 2016, when Rahul visited Kichaucha Sharif dargah in Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. 

During his Ayodhya visit in 2016, Rahul first visited Hanumangarhi temple and then visited Kichaucha Sharif dargah in Ambedkar Nagar.

As per a report by AajTak, Rahul Gandhi stayed at the dargah for 30 minutes where Maulana Suhel Asharaf offered special prayers with him for "peace and prosperity of the nation".


No, Rahul Gandhi didn't visit any religious place of Muslim community. The viral video is from his Ayodhya visit in 2016 when he had visited Hanumangarhi temple and then visited Kichaucha Sharif dargah in Ambedkar Nagar.
