Recently, in the backdrop of continuous debate on CAA And NRC, a video from a BBC report is doing rounds on social media with several people claiming that a Muslim child born in 2018 had his birthplace as ‘Pakistan’ instead of Ahmedabad.

A twitter user shared the video along with a caption, " In #Ahmedabad, #Gujarat, #India an Officer issued a birth certificate of a #IndianMuslim child birthplace in '#Pakistan' - BBC News The family is very upset, scared, why was it done to them."

Another user Md Asif Khan also shared the video saying, "This is from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. A Muslim kid's birthplace is mentioned as Pakistan instead of Ahmedabad in his birth certificate. This Muslim family is scared now, they are trying to get remove this discrepancy. Action should be taken against that officer who did this."

At the time of writing this article, this video has been shared more than 600 times. 

In the video, the mother of the child is saying that they are afraid of impending NRC, Pakistan in the birth certificate may send them to Pakistan for real.

However, a closer look at the address shown in the BBC video reveals that the address mentions the birthplace as Ahmedabad only, and ‘Pakistan Railway Crossing’ is a landmark for the locality. The railway crossing in Vatva, Ahmedabad, is informally known as ‘Pakistan railway crossing’ as it is near a Muslim dominated area. The address of the birthplace of the child is Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

A Times of India article published on the 13th of February reported that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has changed the birth certificate and updated their online records as well. The report informs that the 18-month-old Mohammad Uzerkhan now has an updated birth certificate which does not mention the landmark which was informally known as Pakistan railway crossing.

The BBC video talks about the fears the family has because of the applicability of the Citizenship Amendment Act but it should be noted that CAA is not even applicable to Indian citizens. 

In conclusion, the claim that Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation mentions the birthplace of a Muslim child as ‘Pakistan’ instead of ‘Ahmedabad’ is false, as ‘Pakistan Railway Crossing’ was mentioned as a landmark for the locality and address of the birthplace of the child is Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
