Fact Check: Have USA introduced new dollars with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj portrait on it?

  • Share

Summary

An edited and manipulated image of a $100 bill has been circulated on social media with the claim that the United States is set to release $100 bills with Chhatrapati Shivaji on it

A message is being circulated on WhatsApp claiming that the United States declared 19th February to be celebrated as world Chhatrapati Day after the Maratha king and warrior, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The message which is in Marathi roughly translates to, “Breaking News, This news is happiness and pride for India. The United States declared that February 19th should be celebrated as World Chhatrapati Day because the famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on this day. Special thanks to the United States for this. Spread the message as much as you can”.

We received a request from an anonymous user to verify the claim.

The message not only claims that the $100 bill is going to have the face of Chhatrapati Shivaji but also that the United States has announced that February 19th should be celebrated as World Chhatrapati Day. Firstly, the claim that the US has announced February 19th to be celebrated on the basis of it being World Chhatrapati Day is absolutely false. This can be simply found out by googling the Holidays and Observances in the United States in 2020. Nothing is significantly celebrated or observed on February 19th, thus, that particular aspect of the claim is false.

Secondly, the image of the $100 bill with Chhatrapati Shivaji on it, has been edited using an online editing platform. There is a website called ‘Pho.to’ that allows anyone to edit images onto an image of the $100 bill and this website has been used to edit this particular image. All the fake $100 bills created using this website have the same code on the top and bottom of the note. This code is the same as the one found on the image of the $100 bill with Chhatrapati Shivaji’s face on it. We have used the website to edit an image to prove that the code used by the website is the same for all images.

Moreover, the same fake news has been circulated on social media previously as well.

In conclusion, an edited and manipulated image of a $100 bill has been circulated on social media with the claim that the United States is set to release $100 bills with Chhatrapati Shivaji on it. It also claimed that the United States announced February 19th to be celebrated as Chhatrapati Shivaji Day, which is also proven to be false.
