FACT CHECK: Did a group of Muslim men beat traffic cop for issuing a challan?

Summary

The viral video is an old one from July 2015 when an argument led to a scuffle between traffic police personnel and three bike-riders, two of which were later arrested. In the wake of Anti-CAA protests, the video is now being shared with a communal touch.

In the backdrop of Anti-CAA demonstrations in different parts of the country, a video is being shared on social media with a claim that a Muslim Mob thrashed a traffic police personnel for issuing a challan to them.

A Facebook page shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, " Muslims beat police for issuing a challan to them. It’s an open challenge to the law and order. This video tells what is going to happen henceforth in India; who will run the country and what will be everyone’s future. The bitter truth is that the country is jeopardy from within more than outside. Friend’s for humanity’s sake, I beg you, to please send this video to every group. This should be on the news channels by tomorrow evening."

Another user named Nikhil Kumar also shared the video with similar claims.

The same video is also doing rounds on Twitter with a similar narrative.

In the video, one can see a group of men wearing skull caps, abusing and thrashing traffic police personnel.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found out that the viral video is an old one from July 2015.

With the help of a keyword search, we found a report by a video report by NDTV, according to which the incident took place at Delhi’s Gokulpuri area.

The description of the video reads as “Two traffic police cops were beaten up by a crowd in northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri after they flagged down three men on a bike for not wearing helmets and riding triple.”

Reportedly, the scuffle broke following an argument over issuing a challan for breaking traffic rules when the Delhi traffic police personnel stopped the men in the video for riding triple seat on a two-wheeler. Later, a case was registered against three people. While two were arrested, the age of the third accused, who is believed to be a juvenile, was being investigated.
