A black and white old picture of former prime minister Indira Gandhi is getting viral on social media in which Indira Gandhi is standing in front of a huge crowd and next to her is the Communist party leader Sitaram Yechury who can be seen reading from a paper. The picture is being shared with a claim that in 1975, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi entered the Jawaharlal Nehru University with Delhi Police and had beaten Sitaram Yechury. Indira Gandhi forced Yechury to resign as JNUSU president and read out an apology for protesting against the Emergency.

A Facebook user name Uchhrang Jethwa shares a picture with a claim "1975, Emergency Indira Gandhi enters JNU with Delhi Police and beats CPI leader @SitaramYechury who ws at that time President of JNUSU and forces him to resign and read an apology letter for protesting against emergency.This is called Iron Hand dealing with Communists. Amit shah ji looks saint in front of her".

The same picture is also getting viral on Twitter. A user Sanjeev Rana shared a picture which says  "In 1975, Emergency. Indira Gandhi enters JNU with Delhi Police and beats CPI leader, Sitaram Yechury who was at that time president of the JNU Students' Union and forces him to resign and read an apology letter for protesting against Emergency. This is called Iron Hand dealing with communists. Amit Shah looks saint in front of her."

He shared the picture using caption"Both Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are sadhus against Indira Gandhi. So, they must be IRON MEN to deal with  @shehla_Rashid @RanaAyyub @AzmiShabana @Javedakhtarjadu @FarOutAkhtar @aamir_khan @kamaalrkhan".

The truth behind the Picture 

The claim is false that Indira Gandhi entered into JNU with the Delhi Police and had beaten Sitaram Yechury in 1975.

According to Sitaram Yechury's profile on the CPM's official website, he was underground for some time, organizing resistance to Emergency, before his arrest in 1975.  After Emergency, he was elected as the president of JNU Students' Union thrice during one year (1977-78). We did not find any report mentioning that Indira Gandhi had entered the JNU campus with the Delhi police to beat Sitaram Yechury.

The second claim is false that in 1975, Indira Gandhi forced Yechury to resign as JNUSU president. After doing reverse research of the image, we found an article titled "When JNU Students Forced Indira Gandhi To Resign" by indiaresists.com in which the same picture has been used with a caption, "Sitaram Yechury as a student leader in JNU reading the memorandum presented by students on Sept 5, 1977, to Indira Gandhi demanding her resignation as chancellor of the university".

According to the article, Sitaram Yechury had forced Indira Gandhi to step down as JNU Chancellor, which she had continued to remain even after her defeat in 1977 elections.

The photo is from the end of the Emergency on 5 September 1977. JNU students led by President Yechury marched to Gandhi's residence and shouted slogans there. After 10-15 minutes of strong slogan shouting against the “Criminals of the Emergency”, Indira Gandhi came out with Home Minister during the Emergency Om Mehta and met the students.

Then, Sitaram Yechury started reading the demands of the JNU Students Union and the crimes committed with civilians during the Emergency. The JNU Students' Union had sought Gandhi's resignation from the post of JNU Chancellor and Indira Gandhi resigned following the protest march led by Yechury.

The picture has been used by Hindustan Times as well with the same caption.

We did not find any media report, in which Indira Gandhi asked Yechury to apologize for the protests against the Emergency. In contrast, Indira had to leave the post of Chancellor of JNU due to the opposition of students under Yechury's leadership.

In Conclusion, the claim that Indira Gandhi had forced Sitaram Yechury to resign as JNU Students' Union president and sought an apology during the emergency is false. The picture is from 1977 and not from 1975 and was clicked when JNU students led by Yechury marched to Indira Gandhi's residence demanding her resignation from the post of JNU's Chancellor.
