Fact Check: Were all the men accused in the Hyderabad rape case Muslims?

Summary

Social media users spread the misinformation that all the men who were accused of the gruesome rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinary in Hyderabad were Muslims. Out of four accused, three were Hindus and one was Muslim.

The gruesome rape and murder of a 26-year-old in Hyderabad have sent waves of terror and anger throughout the country. The four men accused in the rape and murder case were shot dead in an Encounter by the Telangana Police. Some netizens have used online platforms to spread the misinformation that all of the four men accused in the Hyderabad rape case are Muslims.

The posts on social media spreading this misinformation have falsely identified the accused as Mohammed Pasha, Mohammed Iqbal, Mohammed Rahim, Mohammed Akram”. 

On Facebook, it was shared by a user Lucky Bhardwaj Savarkar.

A similar claim was shared on Facebook by many other users.

False claim

This is absolutely false, as only one of the accused, Mohammad Pasha, a 26-year-old Lorry driver is a Muslim. The other accused have been officially identified by their real names and as Hindus by a news report by The QuintThe real names of the accused are Pasha, Shiva, Naveen, and Keshavulu.

The names were also mentioned by the police at a press conference.

Moreover, Cyberabad Police also tweeted out that there is no communal angle to the incident. 

In conclusion, social media users spread the misinformation that all the men who were accused of the gruesome rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinary in Hyderabad were Muslims. Out of four accused, three were Hindus and one was Muslim.
