In our investigation, we found out that the picture posted by Manoj Tiwari is from the joint exercise by the Indian and US Navy and the leading ship in the fleet is INS Rana from the Indian Navy. The picture was captured after completion of a cooperation exercise between the Indian and US navy on the Malabar Coast.
On 4th December on the occasion of Indian Navy Day, Manoj Tiwari, member of Parliament tweeted a picture of Indian Navy Ship along with wishes. He wrote a caption that can be roughly translated to, "Warm greetings to all Indian Navy soldiers who are dedicated to protecting the nation with the utmost courage and loyalty."
Following the post, some Twitter users pointed out to the US flag on the second ship in the line and claimed that this picture is of US Navy. A Twitter page named Epic Rofl Don posted the same picture, highlighting America's flag and sarcastically wrote that Manoj Tiwari is congratulating the Indian Navy by stealing the US Navy pictures.
Based on the tweet by Mr. Gokhale, News18 was quick to publish an article to claim that Manoj Tiwari tweeted a picture of the US navy to congratulate the Indian Navy. Even Economic Times published an article on this.
At the time of writing this article, this tweet has been reshared more than 800 times.
Former foreign correspondent Saket Gokhale tweeted "The BJP’s “CM candidate” for Delhi cannot distinguish between the US Flag and the Indian Flag when putting a picture on Navy Day".
On a simple reverse image search on Google, we found the picture posted by Manoj Tiwari uploaded on Wikipedia.
According to the description given on Wikipedia, the leading ship in the fleet is Indian Ship INS Rana and the ship with US flag one from them Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group of US Navy. The picture was taken after the completion of a cooperation exercise between the Indian and US Navy on the Malabar coast and was uploaded on 22 October 2008.
Apart from Wikipedia, we found several other websites like lifeofsoldiers.com and acclaimimages.com that have used the picture with the same claim.
