Fact Check: Is no temple in Delhi older than 100 years?

  • Share

Summary

There are a number of temples in Delhi that are much older than 100 years which clearly means that the claim 'no temple in Delhi or in its nearby area is older than 100 years' is FALSE.

A post on twitter was shared more than 2000 times which claimed that no temple in Delhi or nearby areas, is older than 100 years whereas there are few Churches and Mosques that are centuries old. A twitter user named Shushil Pandit wrote, "Delhi, known as Indraprastha during the Mahabharata era, is at the core of our many millennia-old civilizations. Within its 100 KM radius, you can't find a single Mandir that is even a 100 yrs old. I can show you here an over 800 yrs old mosque and an over 250 yrs old cathedral."

When other users pointed out to Birla temple, he responded that Birla temple is also not a century-old as it was built in 1939.

The Truth Behind this claim

It appeared unrealistic that there are no temples older than 100 years in Delhi as Hindus constitute a majority of the population in India.

While researching old temples in Delhi, we found temples that are not only 100 years old but dates back to AD.

1. KALKAJI MANDIR, DELHI- It is one of the most famous temples in Delhi, dedicated to Goddess Kali, another form of Maa Aadi Shakti. This temple is also touted as Jayanti Peetha or Manokamna Siddha Peetha. The temple traces its history from Satya Yuga (an ancient Hindu era) and is believed to be one of the oldest Maa Kali temples in India. The oldest part was built up in 1764 A.D, however, the oldest surviving portion of it dates to 1764-1771. You can read more about Kalkaji Mandir on Tourmyindia and Durga Puja.

2.Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, Delhi- Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir popularly known as Lal Mandir is one of the oldest Jain temples situated in Delhi. This temple is located just opposite the famous Red Fort. The temple was originally built in the year of 1658 and it was later enlarged and renovated in the early nineteenth century. You can read more about Lal Mandir on Tour My India and Indian Mirror.

3. Hanuman Mandir, Connaught Place- This famous temple is located in the heart of Connaught Place. Hanuman Mandir is one of the oldest religious landmarks in Delhi dating back to the period of Mahabharata. It was originally built by Maharaja Man Singh I and was rebuilt by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 17th century. You can read more about Hanuman Mandir on its official website

There are many other temples in Delhi that are more than 100 years old, such as Gauri Shankar Temple in Chandni Chowk and Yogmaya Temple in Mehrauli.

Therefore, we can conclude that the claim 'no temple in Delhi or in its nearby area is older than 100 years' is FALSE.
