  • Share

Summary

A video of a feud between sellers due to personal enmity is being shared with a communal angle to mislead people.

A video was widely shared on social media in which some people are thrashing an elderly person. The video was shared with several claims, some alleged that few Muslim men thrash an old Sikh man as he was chanting "Bharat Mata ki Jai", while others claimed that the old man was beaten up by BJP supporters as he was speaking against BJP.

A twitter user named Ziddi Jack shared this video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "This elderly man who was speaking against BJP was thrashed. The country is really changing. Full dictatorship".

Another user name Maniram shared the same video with a caption that can be roughly translated to, "See, 10 to 12 Muslim men are beating an old Sardar as he was chanting "Bharat Mata Ki Jai"

In the 2 minutes 20 seconds long video, old man can be heard shouting “Chowkidar Chor Hai, Main bhi ek chowkidar hu, Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, following which men gather around him and beat him.

You can watch the video down below.

The truth behind the claim

In one of the shared video, Akali Dal MLA Majinder S Sirsa commented and shared all the details about the incident shown in the video.

According to the details provided by Majinder S Sirsa, the incident took place at Azad Chowk in Bhilwara, Rajasthan on 15th October 2019.

To ascertain more details about the incident, we reached out to Bhilwara police where they confirmed that the incident happened on October 15, 2019, at Azad Chowk. They further informed that the victim who was assaulted is 55-year-old Hotchand Sindhi (55) and was assaulted by five accused named Manoj alias Mulla Sindhi (39), Hemant Nathani (45), Bhagwan Das (37), Majoor Sheikh (31), and Irfan (34), who were arrested and have been booked under Section 151 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Rajesh Meena, Additional Superintendent of Police from Bhilwara informed that the victim is a Sindhi and not from the Sikh community and the five arrested accused are traders and have shops in the area. They have previously argued with Sindhi as they claim that he used to abuse them.

According to police, there is no communal angle in the incident. Any claim that the victim was beaten for chanting Bharat Mata ki Jai is incorrect. The victim was not beaten because he was chanting Bharat Mata Ki Jai. The victim and the accused knew each other and had also got into arguments previously as the accused who also had shops near the victim’s stall was annoyed as he would frequently hurl abuses at them. Police

In conclusion, a video of a feud between sellers due to personal enmity is being shared with a communal angle to mislead people.
