Recently, clashes between Jawaharlal Nehru University's students and college administration broke after JNU students held a protest against the hike in fees. A post was shared on social media that shows new hostel rules at JNU
In the picture, that appears to be an article from a newspaper, new rules are mentioned in points.
A twitter user-requested us to fact check the post.
The truth
In our investigation, we found a draft of hostel manual at JNU official website:https://www.jnu.ac.in/
First few rules mentioned in the picture, which are (1) 11:30 pm curfew time fixed (2) No student allowed in anyone else's room post 10:30 pm (3) No visitors allowed after 10:30 pm (4) Person from opposite sex not allowed in the hostel room (5) Permission from warden for night outs, are true. You can find all these rules mentioned in the manual on page number 38. However, in the manual, the word "inform" is used in place of "permission", with respect to night outs.
Another point in the picture states that (2) the Appropriate dress code proposed, in the university is also true. You can find this rule mentioned on page number 80.
Fine up to Rs 10000 is mentioned in the picture, for violating hostel norms, which is also correct according to the draft of hostel manual.
There are plenty of news stories about the hike in the JNU hostel fee structure. An article by The Hindu gave all the information about the fee hike.
However, it should also be noted that the rules about curfew timing, visiting timing and dress code, were already present in the existing hostel manual.
Therefore, we can conclude that the information mentioned in the picture about hostel rules at JNU is correct but these are not the reasons for the protest. JNU students are holding protests against the fee hike.
