Fact Check: Bihar mob lynching incident shared with false Communal narratives

  • Share

Summary

The viral claim is false that Abu Kamil was beaten up by his own community members for sexually assaulting a girl. He was beaten up by the mob after he was mistaken as a thief.

A photograph of an injured man attacked by a mob is going viral on social media with different communal narratives. Bollywood actor Ajaz Khan made a tweet about mob lynching, on which questions are being raised on social media. Ajaz tweeted a picture of an injured man, claiming that a Muslim teacher Abu Kamil was beaten up badly by a mob in Mahua, Bihar.

His tweet reads, "Bihar: Terrorist mob in Mahua had beaten another Muslim teacher Abu Kamil. Thinking he is dead after getting thrashed, Kamil was thrown off. But Kamil is alive. The government is not determined to stop the terror of this bloody terrorist mob, there is no law, court, constitution, or decree of punishment for them".

His tweet implies that the teacher was beaten for being a Muslim.

Delhi High Court lawyer Prashant Patel Umrao has claimed that he was beaten by his own community members for raping a girl. Questioning Aijaz's tweet he wrote, " Dear @MumbaiPolice, This fake news peddler @AjazkhanActor is again spreading hatred & want to create Communal Tension in Country. He is on bail, still doing mischief again. Truth is that Abu Kamil raped a girl & was beaten by his community members only".

Both the versions are false

In the investigation, we found that the claim is false that Abu Kamil was thrashed by his own community members for having sexually assaulted a girl. He was beaten up by the mob after he was mistaken as a thief.

We found a video of Aaj Tak shared by a Twitter user It was reported by Aaj Tak that the incident happened in Vaishali, Bihar. According to the news, Shadab Kamil who runs a coaching center in Patna was robbed and beaten up by unknown people who gave him lift in the car and thrashed him and threw him out of the car. When villagers saw injured Shadab on road, they mistook him as a thief and beaten him up brutally.

You can see the video here:

We also found a report of Dainik Bhaskar related to this case. According to this report, the incident took place on 22 September 2019 near Hajipur city of Bihar. The report states that Shadab(Abu Kamil) runs a coaching institute in Patna who was robbed and beaten up by unknown people who gave him a lift in their car. After this, the victim was thrown on the roadside. The worst happened when instead of helping Abu Kalim, some villagers beat him badly as they thought he is a thief.

Conclusion: There is no communal angle in this incident. He was neither beaten up for being a Muslim nor he was thrashed by his own community members for sexually assaulting a girl. He was beaten up by the mob after he was mistaken as a thief.
