  • Share

Summary

The video of Greta Thunberg addressing PM Modi over the climate change is not doctored. It was uploaded on social media by Brut India on Feb 20, 2019.

Last week, a young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was in limelight for her “How Dare you” speech at the United Nations Climate Action Summit on September 23, 2019.

However, a popular Twitter handle @seriousfunnyguy (Lone Crusader 2.0) tweeted a video of the young Swedish climate activist addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action on climate change.

In her message to PM Modi, she said, "Dear Mr. Modi you need to take action now against the climate crisis, not just talking about it because if you keep on going like this doing business as usual and just talking about and bragging about the little victories, you are going to fail and if you fail, you are going to be seen as one of the worst villains in the human history in the future."

You can watch the video here:

The Twitter handle @seriousfunnyguy wrote several points to highlight why it is not right to put the entire blame on Indians for the climate crisis the world is facing now. He highlighted several steps taken by the Modi government to curb climate change. Here are some key points mentioned by him:

1. Modi govt distributed 72 million LPG gas connections to save wood and trees. (claim - True. 80 million LPG gas connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana)

2. India is now producing 4% of its required power using Solar power, saving Fuel. (Claim - True. Solar electricity generation recorded nearly 3.4% of total utility electricity generation in Jan 2019)

3. Modi Govt distributed 350 million LED bulbs reducing electricity consumption. (claim - True. Approximately 35 crore LEDs have been distributed under Ujala Yojana)

4. India has banned single use plastic (Claim - True)

5. India took a first test flight on Bio fuel and already producing Bio fuel from Human hair & Agri stubble from the previous crop (Claim: True)

On Aug 27, 2018, SpiceJet operated India's first biofuel-powered flight from Dehradun to Delhi.

As per a report by Better India, a Punjab Man Used straws to make fuel, eco-products.

6. Narendra Modi govt is working on River cleaning, River Rejuvenation, and River linking projects (Claim: True)

7. Fossil fuel has been banned for boilers in Industry & environment-friendly fuel is compulsory (Claim: True)

However, a few Twitter users raised suspicion over the authenticity of the video shared by @seriousfunnyguy.

Is the video doctored?

No, the video is certainly not doctored. In the video uploaded by @seriousfunnyguy, the logo of Brut is clearly visible. We were then able to find the same video on the timeline of Brut India.

The video was uploaded on both Facebook and Twitter on Feb 20, 2019.

Since the video was uploaded by the official handles of Brut India, it can't be doctored. Also, the video tweeted by @seriousfunnyguy is not from the recently held United Nations Climate Action Summit on September 23, 2019.

Indians were always environment-friendly

Apart from highlighting the steps taken by the government, he also explained how Indians were always environment-friendly. Indians were using biodegradable leaf pattal plates and steel, brass, copper utensils before it was taken over by plastic utensils.

Not only that, most of the restaurants in south India serve food on banana leaves on steel plates.

Several restaurants have started using banana leaves to wrap the 'take-away' food at restaurants. Instead of plastic bags, the food is being wrapped in banana leaves and later in sheets of newspaper.
