Man thrashed for advocating Hindu Rashtra in Mangaluru mall - media misreports the incident

  • Share

Summary

Several media houses misreported that a Muslim youth was beaten up by mobs. The victim was a Hindu man who was beaten for suggesting India is a Hindu Rashtra.

A video is going viral on social media with different narratives. In a 42 seconds long video a man is seen surrounded by a group of people who manhandled him.

In the video, one from the mob is heard asking the victim to speak up. In response, he replied, “This is Hindu Rashtra, do you understand? You Muslims are here…Nothing I was sitting over there.” However, he was interrupted before he could finish his sentence. You can watch the video here:

Wrong narrative by Media

On August 26, Aaj Tak published a report claiming that a Muslim youth was beaten by a mob in a mall in Mangaluru. As per their report, the victim claimed that the attackers told him that India is a Hindu Rashtra and Muslims are not welcomed here.

Aaj Tak later updated their article but the URL still reads, "https://aajtak.intoday.in/story/karnataka-mangaluru-muslim-youth-beaten-video-viral-1-1123254.html".

Jansatta had also claimed that a Muslim man was beaten by a mob. However, they updated the article later on but the older headline is still there in the URL.

News18 Urdu, also broadcasted a video in which the news anchor claimed the victim is a Muslim youth who was told by a mob that India is a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and there is no place for Muslims. The report further claimed that the name of the victim is Shakir, and that according to sources, the assault was the handiwork of men associated with the Sangh Parivar.

Another version by social media users

A section of users on social media has claimed that the man was thrashed by Muslim youths because he opposed the eve-teasing of girls by peaceful (Muslim Youths).

This version was tweeted by Prashant Patel Umrao and Mahesh Vikram Hegde.

The truth about the video

The man who was beaten in the video is Manjunath had visited Forum Fiza Mall on Wednesday and got into an argument with a group. He had allegedly told them that India is a Hindu Rashtra and Muslims should not come here (or Muslims should not come here).

According to Police, the youngsters who assaulted Manjunath belonged to a city-based college and some of them were wearing their uniforms.

On September 25, the official Twitter handle of Mangaluru police tweeted, "A video of an incident of an altercation between two youths was found to be made viral on some SM platforms. Police has taken cognizance, a case is registered and investigation is in progress. Appeal everyone not to misinterpret facts or sensationalize the matter.."

In another tweet, the city police informed that two accused (Moideen Safwan) including one Juvenile was arrested in the case.

By evening another accused (Abdul Rahim Saad) was arrested in the case.

Call for Manjunath's arrest

A section of social media has been calling for Manjunath's arrest.

Reason of Scuffle

While police is investigating the matter, many media houses like the logical Indian has claimed that the incident took place when the students were debating over national issues at the Forum Fiza Mall and the victim, Manjunath, who was having tea at the adjacent table, walked up to them and said, “India is a Hindu Rashtra where Muslims should not come.”

However, according to the news minute, Manjunath in the video can be heard saying "This is Hindu Rashtra, do you understand? You Muslims are here…". As of now, it is not clear what triggered Manjunath to get into argument with those students and what to those students were talking. The police investigation is going on and unless and until we have the clear picture, it will be wrong to term him a bigot.
