Journalists tweeted 8 months old cropped video to claim that a man was beaten for his Muslim name

  • Share

Summary

TOI journalist Piyush Rai and Indian Express correspondent Amit Bhatnagar tweeted an eight-month-old cropped video to claim that a Muslim youth was thrashed by some men after confirming his religious identity.

However, it is clear from the video that they were thrashing him even when his name and religion was not known to them.

Piyush Rai who is a journalist at Times of India tweeted a 45 seconds long video to claim that a Muslim youth was thrashed by few men after his identity was confirmed in Shamli's Thana Bhawan area. He further referred to SP's statement to Times of India to inform that it is a six months old video and no action was taken as the victim didn't come forward with a complaint.

You can watch the video here:

Amil Bhatnagar who is a correspondent at Indian Express also tweeted the same video with a caption "Four men assaulting and beating a Muslim man with sticks after confirming his identity. Video allegedly from Thana Bhawan area of Shamli". His tweet was retweeted by Piyush Rai as well.

Cropped Video

Milan Sharma, a Broadcast journalist at India Today tweeted an extended video of 1 minute 37 second. However, even she claimed that the boy Mansoor Ali was thrashed when he told that he is a Muslim.

You can watch the full video here:

In the video, men asked his name at the 33rd second. At 45th second, one of them asked him "are you Muslim?" to which he nodded in positive. However, it is clear that they were thrashing him even when his name and religion was not known to them.

So, the claim that he was beaten after his religious identity was confirmed is false.

The man in the white shirt who was hitting him with stick appears at the beginning of the video as well. At the 9th second, he told some to bring a stick and then himself went to get the stick.

Therefore, Milan Sharma's claim that he was beaten with a stick after his Muslim identity was confirmed is also false.

Even though it is not clear why men were thrashing him, it is clear from the video that he was not thrashed for being a Muslim.

8 months old video - confirms Shamli Police

While replying to Milan Sharma, Shamli police confirmed that it is 8 months old video. Since the men in the video have not been identified, it is doubtful whether the video is from Bhawan area of Shamli or not. Till now, no one has come up with any complaint.

Ever since Narendra Modi led NDA government came back to power after their resounding win in the Loksabha election, several cases have been reported where people from minorities community were forced to chant Jai Shri Ram and was thrashed for opposing it.

In such circumstances, it is highly insensitive for a journalist to tweet an eight-month-old video with a misleading caption.

However, we have reported many cases where such claims have been proven false. A few days back, it was claimed that Madarsa students were beaten for not chanting Jai Shri Ram in Unnao, UP. However, Unnao police didn't find any evidence to prove this claim. As per police, it was a fight over cricket.

In a similar incident which took place on 4th July, it was initially claimed that a group of men locked up an auto driver in a washroom and pelted stone at him for not chanting "Jai Shri Ram". But later it came into the light that he was thrashed for refusing an auto-ride to the accused.

Last month, a report went viral that a Muslim boy was beaten up by a mob of BJP and RSS workers for not chanting "Jai Shree Ram". However, upon investigation and further inquiry, the boy himself accepted that he was thrashed for harassing a teenage girl.

To create communal tension, there have been cases when Muslim men have forced another Muslim to chant Jai Shri Ram, recorded the video and shared it on the internet.
