Hardik Patel has falsely claimed that no action has been taken against the accused in Surat Coaching Center Fire accident case. Some of the pictures of the incident has been shared with misleading context.
News reports from ANI, The Hindu and NDTV report that a massive fire had broken out in a multi-storey building thus killing several students from a coaching center inside the building. Many people who were stuck in the Takshashila Complex had jumped off the building to escape the fire while many sadly were burnt to death. Following the incident, we learn from The Hindu report that the police had arrested Bhargav Bhutani who was the owner of the coaching center.
The Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma also told the media on Saturday, “We have arrested Bhargav Butani, who was running the coaching center without any permission from any authority”. An FIR has also been reportedly registered against two builders Harshul Vekaria and Jignesh Paliwal for culpable homicide. The report also informs us that “S.K. Acharya, Deputy Chief Fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation and Kirti Modh has been suspended with immediate effect for their negligence in duty”.
A piece of viral news adhering to this incident is a man who saved the lives of some students who were involved in the incident. Ketan Jorawadia, a 23-year-old man has reported to have saved students using a ladder at the back side of the complex. Following the incident, several pictures and videos from the incident have been used by news agencies and other online media where a man is seen to be rescuing people stuck inside the complex. The person who is rescuing people in this video was claimed to be Jorawadia and this was reported by News 18.
This man was reported to be Ketan Jorawadia, but, he is, in fact, Bhargav Butani who is the arrested owner of the tuition center. This can be seen by comparing the picture published by Times of India which shows Butani being arrested and the picture from the incident. It can be confirmed by looking at the clothing of the individual in the pictures given above and below.
This can also be confirmed by looking at the pictures of Ketan Jorawadia from the incident. His clothing is not that of the man rescuing the students.
Many tweets had also included the two different people in the same context without knowing the difference. Major Surendra Poonia who has recently joined BJP tweeted "Braveheart Ketan Jorawadia climbed up to 2nd floor & saved life of 2 students yesterday in Takshshila complex #SuratFireTragedy Putting his own life at risk in sure death zone & going all out to save lives of fellow citizen is an extraordinary bravery Salute & Respect Ketan".
However, this does not mean that Ketan was not involved in rescuing people from the fire. According to news reports, he has saved people who were stuck in the complex. Another difference in reports is that India Today has reported that he rescued 2 students, whereas NDTV reports that he saved at least 10. Furthermore, this misconception has been seen in several reports about this incident. Some Twitter users have also pointed this out.
In conclusion, the pictures used by several news platforms are not that of the ‘Surat Hero’ Ketan Jorawadia but that of the arrested owner Bhargav Butia. Only a few news platforms have reported the incident after proper verification.
On 27th May Hardik Patel tweeted to claim that the government is trying to protect the accused as no action has been taken against the accused in this case.
However, his claim is wrong. Several media houses have reported:
1. The center owner Bhargav Butani was arrested for running the center illegally.
2. An FIR has also been reportedly registered against two builders Harshul Vekaria and Jignesh Paliwal for culpable homicide.
3. S.K. Acharya, Deputy Chief Fire officer of Surat Municipal Corporation and Kirti Modh has been suspended with immediate effect for their negligence in duty.
Hence, Hardik Patel's claim that the government has not taken any action till now is false.
