Sheila Dixit had indeed said that the former PM was not as strong or as determined as PM Modi perhaps. But it shouldn't be considered as a criticism of Manmohan Singh and endorsement of PM Modi as she said that PM Modi doest for electoral gains.
A Twitter user has accused Republic TV of using a misleading headline about Sheila Dixit's comment on PM Modi and Manmohan Singh's stand on terror. The user even called Republic TV a comedy show.
The headline of Republic TV reads "MASSIVE: Sheila Dikshit Admission: Manmohan Singh's Response To Terror Not As Strong As Narendra Modi's". You can read the full article by Republic here.
Not only the Republic, but several other media houses have also used similar headlines. Economic Times' headline reads "Manmohan Singh was not as strong as PM Narendra Modi in dealing with terror: Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit".
News 18's headline was "Manmohan Singh Was Not as Determined and Strong on Terror as Modi, Says Sheila Dikshit".
Times of India, Indian Express, DNA India have all used similar headlines.
However, once the new reports went viral, the former Delhi Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit accused some media organisations of “twisting” her comments. She tweeted "I have seen some media is twisting my comments made in an interview. Here is what I said - it may seem to some people that Mr Modi is stronger on terror but I think this is a poll gimmick more than anything else".
However, a Twitter user @pokershash replied to her tweet with a video in which she can be heard saying "Yes, I agree with you, Manmohan Singh was not as strong or determined as he(PM Modi) is, perhaps".
You can watch the video here:
In the video when asked about the criticism from some quarters that the UPA government did nothing in response to the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai in 2008, she accepted that “Manmohan Singh was not as strong and determined as Modi perhaps”.
Vir Singhvi, the journalist who took the interview tweeted the transcript of the controversial part to clear the air. Here is the transcript:
From the transcript, it is clear that even though she agreed that the former PM was not as strong or as determined as PM Modi perhaps but she also said that there is also the feeling that he is doing it all for the politics and not that he wants to.
Vir Singhvi also endorsed Sheila Dixit's clarification and asked people not to view it as an endorsement of PM Modi or as a criticism of the former PM Manmohan Singh.
Conclusion: Sheila Dixit had indeed said that the former PM was not as strong or as determined as PM Modi perhaps. But it shouldn't be considered as a criticism of Manmohan Singh and endorsement of PM Modi as she said that PM Modi doest for electoral gains.
