Fact Check: Truth behind viral picture of Pandit Nehru taking dip during Kumbh Mela

  • Share

Summary

An image of Pandit Nehru immersing his mother's ashes in Allahabad is being shared as him taking bath during Kumbh Mela in 1954.

Former journalist and director of Pihu Vinod Kapri tweeted an image of India's first prime minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru taking a dip in the river. He claimed that Pandit Nehru had taken bath during Kumbh Mela.

Another Twitter handle associated with Congress had made a similar claim on 25th Dec 2018. The user has claimed that Pandit Nehru had taken bath in 1953 Kumbh Mela.

However, many users were quick to point out that the picture of Pandit Nehru taking a dip in the river is not from Kumbh Mela but was taken during immersion of her mother's ashes in Allahabad.

Dr. Laliya had shared the screenshot of an article by India Today to substantiate his claim. We were able to find out the same article by India Today. The article is a book review of 'The Nehrus: Personal Histories' by Mushirul Hasan & Priya Kapoor. It was published in India Today Magazine in 2006. The well-researched book of rare pictures brings out the intimate histories of India's first family and shows why the nation continues to indulge one of the world's enduring political dynasties. Jawaharlal Nehru's mother Swaruprani Thussu died in the year 1938. Many users pointed it out to Vinod Kapri. A Twitter user claimed that this image is placed in Anand Bhavan in Prayagraj but we couldn't verify this independently.

After being called out, Vinod Kapri shared few videos of Pandit Nehru attending Kumbh Mela in 1954. You can watch the video here:

As per media reports, Pandit Nehru had personally monitored the Kumbh Mela in 1954. Many videos are also available.

But there is no evidence to suggest whether Pandit Nehru had taken bath during Kumbh Mela or not. As far as the image is concerned, it was taken when Pandit Nehru was immersing his mother's ashes in Allahabad (now Prayagraj).
