Kundan or Mullan: Debunking the viral video floating conspiracy theory about Bulandshahr violence

  • Share

Summary

The name being mentioned in a contentious video that has surfaced on the alleged slaughter of cattle in Bulandshahr was “Mullan” — a colloquial reference to the minority community — and not “Kundan”, as was being claimed by Vinod Kapri and others on social media.

Bulandshahr violence has been in news for quite some time now and many conspiracy theories have been floated on social media about the incident that triggered the violence in which a police officer and a local resident lost their lives.

On 4th Dec, an ex-journalist and current filmmaker Vinod Kapri tweeted a video to float his own conspiracy theory about the incident. in his tweet, he suggested that the cow was killed by a Hindu named Kundan to frame Muslim community which would trigger the violence during Bulandshahr Ijtema.

You can watch the video shared by him here:

The video shows a group of men talking in front of torched vehicles and a tractor-trolley loaded with cow carcasses. “How did this tractor trolley reach here? Who brought this?” asks one of the men in the clip. Another man replies, “This one has been slaughtered by Kundan (as interpreted by Mr Kapri)”.

His video was widely shared on social media. One user named Badshah Khan shared a report based on this video in the official group of Aam Aadmi Party managed by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and wrote: "Kundan killed the cow to create violence and communal tension in UP(translated)".

Another user Ravi Nair tweeted "Video posted by @vinodkapri shows Hindutva goons slaughtered cows themselves and created a riot-like situation in UP’s Bulandshahr. And the same goons shot dead a police inspector."

However, many users on Twitter pointed out that the interpretation by Vinod Kapri is not correct because in the video a guy is saying Mullan killed the cow, not Kundan.

Kundan or Mullan: what is being said in the viral video?

A very reputed journalist Swati Goel Sharma tweeted a report of Times of India in which the UP Police have contradicted the claims made by Kapri. As per Times Of India, a top cop involved with the probe stated that the word mentioned in the viral video is ‘Mullan’ and not Kundan. “Mullan is a term used colloquially for (Muslim). It’s generally used by Jats and Lodhis,” said a top UP cop involved in the investigations to TOI. The official said the men who filmed the video were Hindus. The clip is among 14 videos of the violence being examined by the special investigation team (SIT).

You can find the online version of the report here on TOI's website.

Swati Goel Sharma further wrote "While TOI report is only based on cop's statement, @indrajeet_Live of ABP News used forensic technology to conclude that "Kundan" was pure imagination".

"Experienced crime reporter and criminologist Indrajeet Rai used photo and video forensic technology to study each frame of the video. He concludes that "Kundan" didn't feature AT ALL, only "Mullan" and "Kullan" did"

Associate Editor at ABP News and Criminologist, Indrajeet Rai also re-iterated that the Kundan was a pure imagination by Mr Kapri. He wrote "We @abpnews also show 2 days back, its not “kundan”its “mullan” one other word presented in video is “kullan” it was because of speech assent, and the meaning was indicating to minority section, not any individual’s name.

You can watch the report by ABP News here:

Conclusion: The name being mentioned in a contentious video that has surfaced on the alleged slaughter of cattle in Bulandshahr was “Mullan” — a colloquial reference to the minority community — and not “Kundan”, as was being claimed by Vinod Kapri and others on social media.
