Fact Check: Were Pro-Khalistani supporters shouting 'Congress Zindabad' in INC event

  • Share

Summary

Some Khalistani supporters gate-crashed the INC event Indian Overseas Congress UK Mega Conference and raised anti-India and pro-Khalistan slogans.

It's often said to believe your eyes not ears, but when it comes to social media both can mislead. A twitter user helped us to track a false propaganda video targetting Congress party. In the video, some people can be heard shouting "Congress Zindabaad" while slogan "Hindustan Murdabaad" can also be heard the same time. The video targetted Congress by saying 'why do all breaking India forces always support Congress'.

You can watch the video being circulated on social media here

Fact Check:

While the video shared is not doctored but the claim is false. The video is of August 2018 when Rahul Gandhi was about to deliver the inaugural address at the Indian Overseas Congress UK Mega Conference. Few Khalistani supporters who had bypassed the security and gatecrashed the event started shouting “Khalistan Zindabad”. According to TOI, they were angry at Rahul Gandhi's remark on the 1984 riots. Earlier Rahul has said, the anti-Sikh riots were a “tragedy” and “a painful experience”, but added that the Congress was not involved in them.

The people in the event started a counter-chant of 'Congress Zindabad' and all the confusion in the video is based on that. The Khalistan supporters who had refused to leave the event were later escorted out by the police.

The news was also reported by several news channels during that time namely India Today, TOI, The Indian Express.

Conclusion :

Indeed the video is true but the group of people chanting 'Congress Zindabad' are different from the group shouting 'Hindustan Murdabad'. In fact, both the groups are chanting against each other not supporting each other. The claim that they are supporters of Congress or they are supporting Congress is false.
