Ranbir Singh, a 65-year-old farmer from Haryana had to pay a loan amount of approx 9.50 lakh. His blank cheque taken by the bank bounced and he was convicted in the court twice in a Cheque Bounce Case.
A story is going viral on social media and we got to know about it when one of our readers, Avanish Pandey sent the screenshots on Facebook.

Ranbir Singh, a 65-year-old farmer from Haryana took loan of Rs 1.2 lakh to buy a tractor. Rain failed, & he lost the crops. Unable to pay EMI of Rs 6522, Bank tribunal ordered his arrest. Cops arrested him within 5 hours. While in jail, he couldn’t suffer the insult, & he died due to cardiac attack last night. Congrats India, this case is solved!!!
Another page The engineer Bro has written the same story but the name of the farmer has changed which can confuse many people whether the story is correct or not.
When we searched for it, we found that almost every media houses had reported this incident. A Bhiwani-based farmer, Ranbir Singh, 65 died on Oct 1, barely 10 days after being jailed in a Cheque Bounce Case as reported by Indian Express.
The farmer Ranbir owned nine acres of land in his native village, Chaharkalan, in Bhiwani. It was in 1995 when Ranbir took a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh for purchasing a tractor, from Land Mortgage Bank. The bank is now known as Haryana State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank. He took another loan of Rs 1.5 lakh in 2006. He could not pay the instalments on time. By 2016, the outstanding amount against him accumulated to Rs 9.65 lakh.
Bank had taken a blank cheque from Ranbir at the time of giving him a loan. When Ranbir could not pay his instalments on time, they tried to encash the blank cheque by filling in the outstanding amount. Since there was not enough fund in Ranbir’s account, the cheque was dishonoured. Based on that, the bank approached the court and filed a case against Ranbir. He was sentenced to two years in jail by a local court in Haryana's Bhiwani, 112 km from Delhi in 2016 as reported by NDTV.
He approached a higher court which confirmed his conviction on September 21 2018.
So, the overall claim about farmer's death is true. But other claims like loan amount, EMI amount, being arrested by police in 5 hours are not correct. He was sent to jail after getting convicted twice by the court in a Cheque Bounce Case.
After the protest by family members, the authorities have decided to waive off the loan and provided compensation to the family.
The claims about the fraud of Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi are also true. But Government is certainly taking action against them. The government brought the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and booked Mallya under this New Anti-Financial Fraud Law. Vijay Mallya was even ordered to pay 200,000 pounds to Indian banks by UK High Court. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) also moved to seize Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi's assets as reported by TOI. Despite all the actions, the present government has not been able to put them behind the bar.
The biggest tragedy of our system is that mostly it is poor who suffers.
