Fact Check: Was sewage of BJP's office jammed with used condoms as being claimed on social media

  • Share

Summary

An unverified report about BJP office's sewage jammed with used condoms was shared by Altnews co-founder 2 years back. It has now resurfaced in the form of newspaper clipping and is being used by AAP supporters against BJP.

A recent post on Facebook which shows a newspaper cutting ( Name, date of publishing etc can't be seen ). The news reads, ' BJP office sewage was jammed with condoms'.

The news seems to be from Dehradun. When we started looking for any such news, we found news about BJP MLA saying the same thing about JNU. We also landed on India Today Report about sewage getting choked at Commonwealth Games (CWG) Village due to used condoms. This happened in 2010 during commonwealth games. But this is no way related to the claim made in the Facebook post.

We landed on another similar report by inhnews.in which matches with the claim made in the paper cutting. The report is dated as 14th November 2017. But inhnews.in has not claimed the authenticity of the report as they picked this story from Himachal Dastak. They had provided the link of the report but the link has been removed from Himachal Dastak's website.

We found another WordPress blog post with the same claim. The post has not provided any source of this information. The post was written on 2016/11/05.

We found 2 authors on this blog. One was pmcpublish and other was Ranjeet K Gupta who is a Web Developer & freelance journalist. He is also associated with prabhatmediacreations.com, a web development company. As per their website, it is being run from Uttar Pradesh.

Considering the background of this blog, and other posts on it, this source can't be reliable.

We also found that a similar report was shared by the co-founder of a left-leaning fact-checking website AltNews, who runs a parody account Unofficial Subramanian Swamy. (Note: When he shared the news, he was not the co-founder of AltNews.)

He had shared the link of a news website News Manthan but the story has been deleted from the website now.

Is News Manthan a trustable source?

As per whois record, the domain newsmanthan.com was registered by Sunil Tiwari from Dehradun.

If we look at the Youtube channel of this website, it is no longer active as the last video was uploaded 6 months back. However, the website is being regularly updated with a few stories a day.

We then scrolled through the Twitter profile of this website, which is again inactive with the last tweet on 19th Jan 2017. We found that the story was shared on 5th Nov 2016.

Earlier on 22 Oct 2016, they had shared a photoshopped image of Varun Gandhi in a compromising position with a girl. You can see the tweet here. If it gets deleted then here is archived link.

So considering its history, it seems more of a propaganda website against BJP rather than an authentic news website. Even though the owner is from the same city Dehradun, it can't be trusted if we look at its work.

Conclusion: The articles published on these websites cannot be trusted and we could not find any such news published in any reliable media.
Also, the whole concept looks like copied. On every website you visit which has this news, you find the complete content of article the same. So, we cannot trust such posts and are definitely not true.
