A video of an explosion was shared on social media with the claim that this was a scene from West Bengal. In an investigation, it was found that the video was of an unrelated incident from Gujarat.
A video of an explosion was shared by multiple users on Facebook on June 11. The posts claimed that the scene was from the Salap town of Howrah, West Bengal. Such posts can be seen here and here.
The claims come amidst the prophet row, as the Howrah district of Bengal has been seeing violent protests for the past few days. Verified visuals of shops set on fire by protestors have been coming up from the district for a few days now.
The video seems to have been shot from a moving vehicle. The explosion took the shape of a mushroom cloud in the video.
Doing a reverse image search of the keyframes of the video, a relevant Tweet by News18 on June 2 was found. It featured the video of the explosion and stated that the explosion occurred at Deepak Nitrite Company in Vadodara, Gujarat.
Additionally, a news report on this incident by The Hindu Business Line published on June 3 was found.
The report said that seven workers had to be hospitalized after inhaling the smoke, while 700 people living in the vicinity had to be relocated to safer places.
In conclusion, the video of a mushroom cloud explosion is not from Salap town of Howrah, West Bengal. The explosion occurred at a Deepak Nitrite Company chemical factory in Vadodara, Gujarat.
