Fact Check: Old image from Palestine viral as an image from India

  • Share

Summary

An old image of a woman holding stones was shared on Twitter as an image from India. In an investigation it was found that the image is from Palestine and at least eight years old.

An image went viral on Twitter on April 29, depicting a woman with her face covered and holding stones in her hand. Accompanying the image was a parody of the popular song "Meri Desh Ki Dharti". It read "My country's daughter throw stones, throw bricks, my country's daughter" (translated). This was Tweeted from the Indian Twitter handle @sajalllllllll.

On May 4, the same image was again Tweeted from the handle @FltLtAnoopVerma, this time without the parodied text or any mention of the country. Yet, users seemed to think that the image is from India, as evident from the replies to this Tweet. One such reply reads: "Give Yogi Ji control of the entire country's law and order... then they will race against bulldozers, in front, there will be stone pelters, behind them bulldozers..."(translated)

Fact Check

In an image reverse search, it was found that the image is from Palestine, and is at least eight years old. The image was found on the website thetower.org, the website of The Tower, a pro-Israel magazine. On the website, it states that: "Palestinians [sic] youths hurl stones at pilgrims at nearby Rachel's Tomb". The article is dated April 2014, so the image is at least eight years old.

Rachel's tomb is revered as the burial place of the matriarch Rachel and held in esteem by the Jews, Christians and Muslims.
In conclusion, the photo of a woman holding stones is being falsely thought to have Indian origins. The photo is from Palestine, and at least eight years old.
