Fact Check: Video of Akhilesh Yadav saying ‘Jinnah Got Us Azadi’ shared without proper context

  • Share

Summary

The viral video of Akhilesh Yadav saying ‘Jinnah Got Us Azadi’ has been tweeted without context. Akhilesh Yadav had mentioned Jinnah's name during his speech, but this part of his speech was cut and shared without context.

Fact Check: Media houses like Times of India, India Today, Times Now, Indian Express etc published stories on April 18, claiming that according to Delhi Police, the Third Shobha Yatra that erupted into clashes in Jahangirpuri did not have due permission.

permission-video-90941693

In the video, Delhi Police Commissioner Deependra Pathak clearly states that for the first two processions, permission was taken in late March, but for the third procession, the letter seeking permission came on April 15. As a result, the Third procession did not get permission from the Police. Meanwhile, an image claiming to be that of the letter seeking permission for the Third Shobha Yatra was shared on Twitter by @AdityaRajKaul.

The image went viral, and many Twitter users started claiming that the Shobha Yatra did have permission and that the said media houses are spreading fake news.

The letter in question, even if considered genuine, is clearly only a letter seeking permission for the Shobha Yatra, not a proof of permission getting
granted. The Commissioner clearly states in the video that the Yatra did seek permission, but that was not granted because it came in so late. Furthermore, the Commissioner added that despite not having permission, the Police did provide protection to the Yatra because it is the duty of the Police to be present in any large congregation, whether that is approved or not.

For maximum credibility and responsibility, the media always quotes the most credible standing authority who is involved in an issue, such as the Police, government officials, official spokesperson etc. In that regard, no, the media did not publish fake news. The media has only taken an interview of the authority and published a story based on that statement. An unsubstantiated image of a letter does not make the media any less credible for recording the authority's statement. On the flip side, the media has also reported on the VHP's statement in reply to the Delhi Police.

Moreover, the media also later reported on the Delhi Police's retraction of the statement publicly linking VHP and Bajrang Dal with the violence, issuing a new statement without mentioning the Sangh Parivar outfits.

In conclusion, the media did not publish fake news. Reporting on the authority's statement is one of the major duties of the media, even if that claim turns out to be unreliable. As new information comes to light, the narrative may keep changing. But that does not automatically make anything reported initially by the media fake, especially if it is a statement from an official.
