Fact Check: Post claims Bharat Biotech's Covaxin approved for children above 12 years; govt calls it fake

  • Share

Summary

The viral claim is false that Bharat Biotech's vaccine, Covaxin, has been approved for children above 12 years of age.

Amidst multiple reports of post-poll violence in West Bengal, after the declaration of State assembly elections results on May 2, a video is getting viral on social media in which some people wearing saffron clothes in the middle of the road are seen clashing with policemen. The video is being shared with a claim that Mamta Banerjee's police drove foreign Hindus for promoting Hinduism in West Bengal.

A Facebook user name Sharad Agarwal share the video with the caption"Have a look at this incident from West Bengal. This is today's *secular* West Bengal. When devotees of ISKCON were distributing Bhagavad-gita and other spiritual literature, people from the *most peaceful* Islam religion started beating them. When the devotees resisted the police were sent by *Mamata Didi* who is converting West Bengal into an Islamic state. Hats off to the brave devotees of Krishna who put their Japa mala aside and started hitting them back. Brave people may forward this to all Hindus. Others may continue to be *Sickular*."

The same post is also getting viral on Twitter with a similar claim.

The viral video received 755 Likes, 555 Retweets, and 4,840 views at the time of writing this article.

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is misleading. This was an old video from 2008 when Russian members of the Hare Ram Hare Krishna group clashed with Goa police near Mapusa police station.

After doing a reverse image search on google using related keyframes of the video. We found a video on a Russian YouTube channel uploaded on 28 August 2013. The caption of the video reads, Translation: Hare Krishna from Russia, we went to India, the motherland of Krishnaism, and performed there too. We had a fight there. Russians will remain Russians. "

We also found this viral video uploaded on a YouTube channel "Discover Goa" in April 2018. The caption of the video reads, "Russian tourists attack Goa police in Mapusa"

A news report on this incident was also published on Heraldo Goa on 26 November 2008. But this news did not fully opened. However, the headline, description, and date of its publication suggest that this news is about the same incident in Goa.

On searching the news of "O Heraldo" on the Internet we found a Reddit thread in which the entire report of the case was present.

According to the report, Religious chants by a group of Russian members of the Hare Ram Hare Krishna sect near the Mapusa police station took a violent turn in 2008, when the Russians clashed with the police and ended up getting assaulted by the public. Two policemen were injured in the clashes and the eight Russians have been arrested on charges of rioting and assaulting cops.

As per the Mapusa police, a group of Russians dressed in saffron attire was seen marching along the main streets of Mapusa chanting Hare Ram, Hare Krishna, equipped with dholak (drum) and a harmonium. Irritated by the singing and consequent traffic congestion that resulted along the main road opposite the municipal market, some citizens informed the police about the nuisance.

In conclusion, an old video from 2008 when Russian members of the Hare Ram Hare Krishna group clashed with police in Goa is being falsely linked to post-poll violence in West Bengal. The video has nothing to do with West Bengal.
