Fact Check: Videos of a crematorium in Gujarat falsely shared to be Maharashtra

Summary

Videos showing a long queue of COVID-19 victims’ dead bodies waiting for cremation outside the crematoriums in Gujarat is being shared with the false claim that visuals are from Maharashtra. 

India’s crematoriums and burial grounds are working overtime to cope with the surging number of deaths from the country’s escalating coronavirus outbreak.

Amid this, two videos showing people waiting outside crematoriums with dead bodies are getting viral on social media claiming that these are the Visuals from Maharashtra.

Video-1:

A Facebook page name Inside Daily Nagaland shares a video with a claim that “Covid-19 second wave situation in Maharashtra is very serious. No place for the dead bodies in every hospital.”

Video-2:

A video is shared on Youtube by a channel name Diary Coverage with a claim that "Corona Terror in Maharashtra..the cemetery is on the road"

 

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral claim to be false. Both the video are from Gujarat and has nothing to do with Maharashtra.

Video-1:

After doing reverse image research using related keyframes of the video, we found a Video on YouTube published by a channel name BRG News, dated April 8, 2021. The description of the video reads."Surat Umra cremation viral video: Waiting for the funeral of 40 bodies in Surat Umrah, Token system".

We also find a news article published by Danik Bhaskar on April 9, 2021, in which you can see the snapshots of the viral videos. As per the report, the video is from Gujarat, and 40 dead bodies of COVID-19 victims arrived in Umra crematorium in Surat a few hours after the deaths. The family waited for 3 to 4 hours to perform the last rites.

Video-2:

After doing a reverse image search on google using related keyframes of the video, we found an article published by a news website of  ‘The Daily Guardian' which carried similar visuals. According to the article,  Visuals of dead bodies waiting for cremation is from Gujarat. 

In conclusion, a video showing a long queue of COVID-19 victims’ dead bodies waiting for cremation outside the crematoriums in Gujarat is being shared with the false claim that visuals are from Maharashtra.
