Summary

An old unrelated image from 2019 showing people protesting against the former President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika viral with a false claim that people in foreign countries are protesting against the imposition of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the surging COVID-19 cases in the country, a video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a young boy pushing a stretcher inside a hospital claiming that the shows the recent pandemic crisis in the country.

Twitter user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "What would make a more self-reliant India? This is enough," along with hashtags, 'COVID19', 'coronavirus' and 'indianeedoxygen'.

The video is also doing rounds on Facebook with the same caption in Hindi.

At the time of writing this article, this post has been reshared over 500 times.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral video is not related to the second wave of COVID-19 and dates back to July 2020.

With the help of reverse image search using the keyframes of the video, we found one of the frames carried a Times of India report as a cover image. The article dated July 20, 2020, had the headline, "UP: 6-year-old seen pushing grandfather's stretcher in Deoria hospital, ward boy suspended."

As per the report, a ward boy from the Deoria district hospital was removed for allegedly demanding Rs 30 for pushing the stretchers of patients.

News18 and AajTak reported that Deoria District Magistrate Amit Kishore had visited the hospital to meet the family members of Chedi Yadav, the patient in the viral video. A probe set up under Sadar SDM and the assistant chief medical officer of the hospital found the ward boy as the ‘culprit.’

In conclusion, an old video from July 2020 showing a child and his mother push the stretcher of their injured grandfather is being falsely shared as a recent one amid the COVID-19 crisis in the country.
