Fact Check: Old-Unrelated Image Viral Falsely Showing People Protesting Against Lockdown

Summary

An old unrelated image from 2019 showing people protesting against the former President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika viral with a false claim that people in foreign countries are protesting against the imposition of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

In the backdrop of lockdown in several parts of the country due to the increasing COVID-19 cases in the country, an image is being widely shared on Facebook claiming that people in other countries are protesting against the imposition of lockdown. 

A Facebook user shared the image that can be roughly translated to, "In foreign, lockdown is being boycotted in this way whereas here, there is a wait for lockdown. Everything is happening on God’s trust.”

At the time of writing this article, over 100 people have reshared the post. 

Several other users are sharing this image on Facebook with the same claim. 

The truth behind the claim 

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The image is unrelated to the COVID-19 crisis and dates back to March 2019. 

With the help of reverse image search, we found this image shared on Facebook on March 9, 2019. On further investigating, we found this carried in several news reports in March 2019, stating that the image is from a massive protest organized against the former President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika demanding his resignation from the post. 

According to BBC reports, Mr. Bouteflika, who has been in power for 20 years, resigned after weeks of massive street protests.

In conclusion, an old unrelated image from 2019 showing people protesting against the former President of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika viral with a false claim that people in foreign countries are protesting against the imposition of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
