Fact Check: Video Showing Broken Hindu Idols Inside A Temple Shared With False Communal Angle

  • Share

A video from a Temple in Delhi's Dwarka, showing broken idols inside the structure is being shared with a false communal angle.

A video has surfaced on social media platforms showing broken idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses inside a temple with a claim that on the first day of Navratri in Delhi's Dwarka, a group of people from a particular community entered a 'Hanuman Temple' and damaged the idols.

BJP member Naveen Kumar shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Near Delhi's Dwarka, In the #Kakrola village, just one day before the Navratri, the idol of the Gods and Goddess was broken inside a  Hanuman temple by the jihadis. Now, where is the Ganga Jamuni Tehzeeb who talks about brotherhood, or is Hindu only fodder for them? @DelhiPolice Arrest the accused soon."

The video is also doing rounds on Facebook with a similar narrative.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this claim to be misleading. The incident has no communal angle to it.

On performing a relevant keyword search, we found a report published by TNIE on April 13, 2021, according to which, the incident is from Delhi's Dwarka. Reportedly, the accused was upset and "angry with God" over rising temperature and lack of rain, and due to this, he defiled the idols in Hanuman Temple.

Moreover, in response to a tweet by Sudarshan News, DCP Dwarka clarified that there is no communal angle to the incident. The tweet reads, "Miscreant Mahesh@ Bhut (45yr), a resident of same locality, has been arrested in our prompt action. Says he was aggrieved on God due to inadequate rainfall. There is no communal angle in this unfortunate incident. @DelhiPolice."

In conclusion, a video from a Temple in Delhi's Dwarka, showing broken idols inside the structure is being shared with a false communal angle.
