An edited image of Home Minister Amit Shah is being widely shared falsely claiming that Shah campaigned at Sonagachi, a north Kolkata neighborhood that is largely inhabited by sex workers.
Recently, a video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a violent clash between volunteers in uniform similar to police officials and some people on road claiming that the incident is from Ujjain where people issued a challan against a Marshal for not wearing masks.
A Twitter user shared the video with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "In Ujjain, Marshal was issuing challan for not wearing masks, people issued a challan against the marshal."
Several other Facebook and Twitter users are also sharing this video with the same claim.
In our investigation, we found the claim shared with this video to misleading. The incident is not from Ujjain, but from South Delhi, when a dramatic clash broke out between the Delhi government's civil defense volunteers and passers-by, as the volunteers were carrying out a mask-checking exercise in the area.
With the help of reverse image search, we found this video carried a news report by 'Dilli Tak' on YouTube. As per the description of the video, the incident in Delhi when people who got angry as 'challan' was being issued against them for not wearing masks, attacked the defense volunteers.
Taking a hint from this, we performed a keyword search, we found an NDTV report on the incident. As per the report, the incident took place on April 5, near Hauz Khas. An excerpt from the article reads, "The fight broke out after the personnel stopped a car near a traffic signal near the IIT-Delhi in Hauz Khas area. According to the police, as the traffic light was green, the driver of another car, a man identified as Gitesh Dagar, applied the brakes suddenly following which a third car hit it. Angry, Dagar walked out of his car and confronted the officials, following which heated arguments broke out between the two parties. In videos, Gitesh Dagar and the Civil Defence personnel are seen having heated arguments, the police said."
The article states that two FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident.
In conclusion, a video showing the Delhi government's defense volunteers assaulted by the angry public for issuing challan for not wearing masks is being shared with a misleading claim that the video is from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
