Fact Check: Edited image of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru viral on social media

  • Share

Summary

An edited image showing former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's image in a room full of ladies is being widely shared on social media to discredit his image.

Recently, on 10 April, 4 four people were killed as CISF personnel allegedly opened fire after coming under attack from locals who "attempted to snatch their rifles" outside a polling booth in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district.

Amid this, a  disturbing image of an injured CISF personnel is viral with a claim that  he was attacked by Trinamool goons during the poll violence in Cooch Behar, West Bengal

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari shared a post on his Twitter account with a claim that "During the fourth phase of voting in Cooch Behar's Shitalkuchi, CISF jawans were attacked by TMC's goons. They tried to snatch the guns from the jawans. One jawan was grievously injured in the incident. So the central forces were forced to fire for self-defense."(Roughly translated from Bangla)

Fact Check

In our investigation, we found that the viral claim is false. The injured man seen in the picture is CISF ASI SP Sharma, who was attacked by a langur while on duty at Baghmara in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.

After doing a reverse image search on google we found a news report of Danik Jagran published on April 10, in which the same image can be seen. According to the article, a CISF personnel was attacked by langur while on duty at Baghmara in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.  The injured man seen in the picture identity is CISF ASI SP Sharma.

In conclusion, the image of an injured CISF personnel who was attacked by a langur at Dhanbad on April 9 falsely shared as he was attacked by 'TMC goons' in Cooch Behar, West Bengal.  The image has nothing to do with the poll violence at Sitalkuchi in West Bengal.
