Fact Check: Morphed news clipping falsely links 'BJP leader' arrest to the recent Maoist attacks in Chhattisgarh

Summary

A morphed image of a Hindi newspaper clipping is being widely shared with a false claim that a BJP leader was arrested in connection to the recent Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh, in which over 20 security personnel lost their lives. 

In the backdrop of ongoing assembly elections in West Bengal, a video has surfaced on social media platforms showing a polling agent illegally voting for two women with the claim that the video is from the ongoing elections in West Bengal. 

A Twitter user named Keya Ghosh shared the video with the caption saying, "Got from WA. This is how TMC has been doing rigging.@ECISVEEP"

At the time of writing this article, this post has been reshared over 450 times. 

Several other social media users are also sharing the video with the same caption. 

The truth behind the claim 

In our investigation, we found this claim to be false. The viral video is an old one and is not related to the ongoing assembly elections in West Bengal. 

With the help of reverse image search, we found a screengrab of the video carried in a news report by Newscentral24x7 that was published on May 16, 2019. 

Vinod Sharma, the political editor of the Hindustan Times, also shared the same video on May 15, 2019. He wrote: "Another achievement #ElectionCommission. Shocking to say the least."

We were not able to ascertain the location of the incident, however, it is clear that the video is at least 2 years old and not related to the ongoing assembly elections in West Bengal. 

In conclusion, an old video showing a polling agent illegally voting for two women is being shared with a false that the video is from the ongoing assembly elections.
