  • Share

An image showing a Muslim couple giving blessings to their newly married foster daughter, who was born in a Hindu family and got married to a Hindu boy with a misleading claim.

Recently, a picture of a newly-married Hindu couple seeking blessings from a Muslim couple is being widely shared on social media claiming that the Muslim couple had married off their daughter to a Hindu man.

A Twitter user shared the image with a caption in Hindi that can be roughly translated to, "Muslim parents in Kerala got their daughter married to a #Sanatani boy... Daughter will be safe in #Hindu_ home."

The image is being shared with the caption in Hindi by several other users on Facebook and Twitter

The image shows the bride touching the feet of the burqa-clad woman while the groom looks at her.

The truth behind the claim

In our investigation, we found this to be misleading. The image shows Abdulla Abdurahiman and his wife blessing their newly wedded foster daughter Rajeshwari, who was born in a Hindu family and got married to a Hindu boy. The marriage took place on February 16, 2020.

With the help of reverse image search, we found a Times of India report published on February 19, 2020, carrying the viral image. As per the report, Abdulla Abdurahiman from Melparamba, Kasaragod in Kerala had adopted Rajeshwari when she was ten years old. Rajeshwari had lost her parents, both farm laborers from Tamil Nadu.

The report further states that since Rajeshwari's husband Vishnu's family demanded that the wedding be carried out at a temple, the families chose 'Manyottu temple in Kanhangad where people from all religions are allowed'.

A similar report was also published on India Today according to which, Rajeshwari tied the knot with Vishnu Prasad at the temple on February 16 in the presence of family and friends belonging to both Hindu and Muslim communities.

In conclusion, an image showing a Muslim couple giving blessings to their newly married foster daughter, who was born in a Hindu family and got married to a Hindu boy with a misleading claim.
